Synopsis

The Centre plans to introduce a Postal Logistics Infrastructure Plan aimed at modernising India Post’s parcel and logistics network in line with global standards. Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said the initiative will strengthen supply-chain efficiency, support rising e-commerce demand and upgrade postal infrastructure through technology-led systems. The government is also expanding delivery capabilities, extending post office operating hours and accelerating digitisation across services.

India Post is set to undergo a major logistics and infrastructure transformation as the government prepares a new Postal Logistics Infrastructure Plan to modernise the country’s postal network and align it with international standards.

Speaking during the inauguration of the renovated Nehru Place Post Office in New Delhi earlier this week, Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said the government intends to strengthen India Post’s logistics capabilities to support the rapid growth of e-commerce and digitised services.

He indicated that the proposed framework would focus on creating a modern, supply-driven logistics ecosystem comparable to those in developed economies, with improved operational efficiency and infrastructure integration.

The minister stated that global e-commerce expansion increasingly relies on postal delivery systems and India would require a more advanced logistics backbone to support future demand. He added that India Post currently delivers around 7.5 crore parcels annually and processes nearly 90 crore letters every year. Postal infrastructure has also been used to facilitate services such as passport processing and Aadhaar enrolment.

Scindia further highlighted the growing financial role of the postal network, noting that the Post Office Savings Bank currently holds around 40 crore accounts with deposits exceeding INR 23 lakh crore.

Minister of State for Communications Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani said the government has invested nearly INR 5,800 crore towards post office modernisation initiatives. These upgrades include OTP-based deliveries, real-time SMS tracking systems and operational digitisation aimed at improving transparency and customer convenience.

He also noted that India Post has extended working hours at select offices to improve accessibility for working professionals, while introducing faster 24-hour and 48-hour Speed Post delivery services across six metropolitan cities.

According to Pemmasani, the department has also undertaken rationalisation measures to make the postal network more responsive and operationally efficient. He said India Post’s revenue growth has accelerated significantly over the past year, with revenue increasing by approximately INR 2,100 crore compared to annual increases of INR 200-300 crore recorded historically.
