Synopsis

Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation Commissioner Dr Kailas Shinde conducted an extensive inspection of drain desilting operations, transport infrastructure projects and civic amenities across Navi Mumbai in the past week, directing officials to accelerate pre-monsoon preparedness and complete critical works within stipulated timelines. The review covered major natural drains in Kopri, Vashi and Sanpada, the Ghansoli–Airoli creek bridge project linked to Palm Beach Road, traffic management measures at Talavali Naka, and civic infrastructure including crematorium facilities, health centres and underpasses. During the inspection, the commissioner instructed officials to remove silt immediately after drying, undertake structural audits of ageing infrastructure, and coordinate with multiple agencies to address wastewater contamination in drains flowing into the creek system.

Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation Commissioner Dr Kailas Shinde carried out an inspection of multiple civic infrastructure projects and drain desilting works across Navi Mumbai in the past week, with a focus on monsoon preparedness, transport infrastructure and urban service improvements. The inspection covered natural drain cleaning operations in Kopri, Vashi and Sanpada, ongoing bridge construction works, traffic congestion points and several public utility facilities across the municipal area.

The commissioner reviewed drain desilting works at Kopri and Sector 17, Vashi, where he instructed officials to remove excavated silt immediately after partial drying to avoid obstruction and sanitation issues. The civic administration stated that the ongoing desilting programme prioritised the removal of obstructions in flowing natural drains to maintain uninterrupted stormwater movement during the monsoon season. Officials informed the commissioner that large-scale silt removal works were being undertaken across major drains this year to minimise waterlogging risks during heavy rainfall.

Senior municipal officials accompanying the inspection included Additional City Engineer Arvind Shinde, Deputy Commissioners Somnath Potre and Sanjay Shinde, Garden Department Deputy Commissioner Smita Kale, Solid Waste Management Deputy Commissioner Dr Ajay Gadde, along with executive engineers and departmental officers.

The inspection tour commenced at 8 am with a review of the Ghansoli–Airoli creek bridge project connected to Palm Beach Road. Officials informed the commissioner that 44 out of the proposed 89 bridge piers had been completed. He directed project teams to complete the remaining pier foundation works and reach the pier cap stage by the end of June. Instructions were also issued to continue spine, wing and girder casting works during the monsoon period and to ensure that girder launching activities were not halted midway once initiated. The commissioner additionally instructed officials to prepare a date-wise execution schedule and ensure strict compliance with project timelines.

At Talavali Naka, the commissioner inspected a junction near the entry point where recurring traffic congestion has been reported. He directed officials to seek technical assistance from experts at Indian Institute of Technology for preparing a traffic improvement plan and implementing it at the earliest. Authorities were also instructed to take preventive action against roadside parking on both sides of the carriageway, which was identified as a major contributor to congestion in the area.

During a visit to the Kopri crematorium, the commissioner instructed civic officials to provide bathing facilities, drinking water arrangements and lockers for storing ashes for families attending funeral ceremonies.

The commissioner also inspected major drain cleaning operations at Kopri village, near the Kopri signal petrol pump, Sector 29, Sector 17 in Vashi and Sector 11 in Sanpada. He directed officials to undertake deeper desilting operations and remove accumulated sludge immediately after drying. Instructions were issued to trim vegetation along drain edges, install iron mesh barriers along both sides of the drain near the Kopri petrol pump and increase the height of the bridge wall in the same area. He also instructed officials to construct protective compound walls on the road-facing side of drains at Kopri village and the central drain in Sector 17, Vashi, similar to the barriers already built on the opposite side.

To address wastewater contamination in stormwater channels, the commissioner directed engineers from Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation, Maharashtra Pollution Control Board and the municipal corporation to jointly inspect drains from their source points to the creek outfall. He instructed the public health engineering department to identify locations where drains become polluted and establish small sewage treatment units to ensure cleaner water flow within the drainage network.

The inspection further covered the amusement park at Kopri, where the commissioner recommended multiple improvements and directed officials to conduct a structural audit of a large turtle-shaped installation within the park. At the Ayushman Arogya Mandir in Sector 29, Vashi, officials were instructed to undertake beautification of the surrounding area. Structural audit and repair measures were also ordered for the underpass at Sector 7, Vashi. During a visit to the temporary vegetable and fish market at Vashigaon, the commissioner suggested acquiring land from City and Industrial Development Corporation for developing a permanent and better-equipped market facility.

Throughout the inspection tour, the commissioner halted at multiple locations to issue instructions related to urban cleanliness and civic maintenance across the city.
