The Ministry of Railways has initiated land acquisition proceedings for a road overbridge project between Nidadavolu and Chagallu stations in Andhra Pradesh, marking progress in a long-pending railway infrastructure exercise linked to regional connectivity upgrades under South Central Railway (SCoR). A recent gazette notification issued by the Union government proposes the acquisition of over 5.25 acres across villages in East Godavari district for the construction of a road overbridge in place of an existing level crossing. The move comes after prolonged inter-state coordination and alignment-related delays affecting multiple railway expansion and connectivity initiatives involving Andhra Pradesh and Odisha. The acquisition covers both government and privately held land parcels, including agricultural plots, and forms part of broader efforts to improve rail movement, reduce congestion at level crossings, and strengthen operational efficiency on the corridor.
The Ministry of Railways has formally initiated land acquisition proceedings for the construction of a road overbridge between Nidadavolu and Chagallu stations in Andhra Pradesh, advancing a pending infrastructure project under South Central Railway (SCoR) that had remained delayed amid alignment and inter-state coordination issues involving Andhra Pradesh and Odisha.
A notification issued by the Ministry of Railways through South Central Railway in the past week stated that the Central Government intends to acquire land for the construction of a road overbridge in place of Level Crossing No. 384 located at kilometre 559/8-10 between Nidadavolu and Chagallu stations in East Godavari district. The notification was issued under Section 20A of the Railways Act, 1989, enabling acquisition for public infrastructure purposes.
The proposed acquisition covers land parcels in Nidadavolu village of Nidadavolu Mandal and Brahmanagudem village of Chagallu Mandal. According to the schedule attached to the gazette notification, the total land identified for acquisition measures approximately 5.254 acres, equivalent to over 2.12 hectares.
The land parcels include a mix of government-owned and privately held properties categorised as road land, railway permanent land and agricultural land. Several dry agricultural plots have been listed within the acquisition schedule, along with portions classified under poramboke land. The notification also stated that interested persons may file objections within 30 days from the publication of the gazette.
The Revenue Divisional Officer, Kovvur, has been designated as the competent authority for land acquisition and will oversee hearings and objections related to the process. The notification further clarified that the authority may allow or reject objections after conducting enquiries deemed necessary under the provisions of the Railways Act.
The proposed road overbridge is intended to replace an existing level crossing on the route, a move expected to improve traffic movement and operational safety along the rail corridor. Grade separation projects such as road overbridges are commonly undertaken to reduce delays at manned crossings and improve train movement efficiency on high-density routes.
The development assumes significance as several railway infrastructure proposals in the Andhra Pradesh–Odisha region have witnessed delays over the years due to alignment disputes, land acquisition hurdles and coordination between state agencies. While the present notification pertains specifically to East Godavari district under South Central Railway jurisdiction, it reflects renewed progress in clearing pending procedural stages for railway-linked infrastructure works in the broader coastal corridor.
South Central Railway has also indicated that detailed land plans and related acquisition records are available for inspection at the office of the competent authority. The acquisition process is expected to proceed following the objection period and statutory review procedures mandated under railway land acquisition regulations.
