A 19-year-old construction worker died after being hit by a steel frame during work at the Sewri–Worli Connector project in Mumbai. The accident happened while heavy iron structures were being lifted using a crane, pointing to possible lapses in handling and supervision. Police have filed a case against the crane operator and site supervisor for negligence. The incident comes amid multiple recent accidents across infrastructure projects in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, raising continued concerns about worker safety and on-site monitoring standards.
A 19-year-old worker lost his life following an accident at an under-construction Sewri–Worli Connector site in central Mumbai, highlighting ongoing safety concerns at large infrastructure projects. Work at the location involved shifting heavy steel frames with the help of a crane as part of ongoing structural activity. During this process, two large frames were being lifted and moved across the site. The worker was walking close to the suspended structures when one of the frames reportedly became unstable and swung suddenly. It struck him in the chest and abdomen, causing serious injuries.
Co-workers and the crane operator immediately rushed him to KEM Hospital. However, doctors declared him dead during treatment, as he had already lost consciousness at the site due to the impact.
Police officials said that the accident appeared to be the result of improper handling of the crane, which led to the loss of balance of the suspended frame. A case has been registered at Bhoiwada police station against the crane operator and the site supervisor under provisions related to causing death due to negligence. Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine responsibility and whether safety norms were followed at the time of the incident.
The Sewri–Worli Connector is a key infrastructure project being developed by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority. It is planned to connect the Coastal Road with the Atal Setu, improving east-west connectivity in Mumbai. A large portion of the basic structural work, including piers, has already been completed, and work on spans and girders is currently underway.
The accident comes at a time when several such incidents have been reported across infrastructure projects in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region over the past week. Fatalities have been recorded at other sites, including a platform collapse at the Dahisar–Bhayandar Link Road project and another case involving heavy machinery on the Sion–Panvel corridor.
Previous incidents at construction sites in the city have pointed to recurring issues such as lack of supervision, gaps in safety gear usage, and errors in operating heavy equipment. At the same Sewri–Worli project site, there had been an earlier incident where construction material had fallen within a work zone, indicating concerns that safety risks may not have been fully addressed.
The repeated occurrence of such accidents has drawn attention to the need for stricter enforcement of safety measures, especially at large projects operating under tight timelines and involving complex machinery and heavy materials.
