Synopsis

Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited has introduced a programme allowing private events such as birthday parties, pre-wedding shoots and film productions on metro coaches and station premises in Indore and Bhopal. The ‘Celebrations on Wheels’ initiative comes as metro services in both cities report lower-than-expected ridership. The scheme permits use of stationary and moving coaches for a fee, with defined capacity limits and security deposits. Authorities stated that the move is aimed at improving public engagement with metro infrastructure while generating additional non-fare revenue from existing assets within the urban transport network.

Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MPMRCL) has launched a new initiative permitting the use of metro trains and station premises for private and commercial events in Indore and Bhopal, in an effort to enhance utilisation of metro infrastructure amid lower-than-anticipated ridership levels.

The programme, titled ‘Celebrations on Wheels’, was introduced in the past week and allows activities such as birthday celebrations, pre-wedding shoots, filming, web series production, advertisements and other socio-cultural events within designated metro spaces. The initiative enables controlled access to both stationary and operational metro coaches, subject to safety norms and operational guidelines.

Under the framework, a stationary, undecorated metro coach can be booked at a fee of INR 5,000 per hour, while the use of a moving coach is priced at INR 7,000 per hour. A refundable security deposit of INR 20,000 per coach is required at the time of booking, which will be returned upon compliance with prescribed conditions following the event.

The corporation has set a limit of 50 participants for activities such as birthday parties, pre-wedding shoots and small gatherings within metro premises. Additional participants, if permitted, would be subject to standard fare regulations applicable to metro services.

Officials indicated that the initiative is designed to align with evolving urban lifestyles and to integrate metro infrastructure more closely with public engagement. The programme is also intended to position metro systems as multi-functional urban assets, beyond their primary role in transportation.

The move comes at a time when metro networks in both Indore and Bhopal are witnessing lower-than-expected passenger volumes, prompting authorities to explore alternative revenue streams and utilisation strategies. By allowing curated access to infrastructure for events and creative productions, the corporation aims to generate supplementary income while increasing visibility and usage of metro facilities.

The initiative reflects a broader trend among urban transport authorities to monetise non-core assets, including station spaces and transit infrastructure, through commercial and experiential offerings. Such measures are increasingly being considered to improve financial sustainability of metro systems, particularly in the early stages of operations when ridership levels are still stabilising.

While the programme introduces new revenue opportunities, its implementation will require adherence to safety protocols and operational constraints to ensure that core transport services remain unaffected. The initiative is expected to be monitored for response and operational feasibility before any potential expansion to additional formats or locations.
