Synopsis

The Centre has cleared the launch of the South Coast Railway Zone, with operations scheduled from June 1 and headquarters in Visakhapatnam. The move fulfills a long-pending demand of Andhra Pradesh and is expected to improve railway administration, connectivity, and freight movement. Key changes include restructuring of the Waltair division and coordination with the Rayagada division. The new zone is likely to support industrial growth in North Andhra, enhance logistics efficiency, and create employment opportunities while strengthening overall railway infrastructure in the region.

The Union government has issued a gazette notification for the formation of the South Coast Railway Zone, with operations set to begin from June 1. The zone will be headquartered in Visakhapatnam and is expected to improve administrative efficiency in railway operations across Andhra Pradesh.

The development addresses a long-standing demand of the state, which had been pending since the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation process. State officials indicated that the new zone would strengthen railway infrastructure and bring better coordination in operations, along with improved passenger and freight services.

As part of the restructuring, the existing Waltair division has been reorganised. Its operational structure has been split, with major portions brought under the Visakhapatnam division. At the same time, the Rayagada division will function alongside it, ensuring smoother management of routes and better regional connectivity. This reorganisation is expected to reduce operational overlap and improve efficiency in handling traffic.

The zone is also expected to support industrial and logistics growth, particularly in North Andhra. Improved rail connectivity is likely to benefit sectors such as ports, steel, cement, and other bulk cargo industries that depend on efficient freight movement. Officials believe this will help reduce transit time and improve supply chain reliability.

The South Coast Railway Zone was first announced in 2019, but delays in administrative approvals and structural planning slowed its implementation. The recent notification clears these pending steps and enables the zone to move towards full operations.

In recent years, railway investments in Andhra Pradesh have increased, with a focus on network expansion, station upgrades, and capacity enhancement. The launch of the new zone aligns with these efforts and is expected to bring more focused development to the region’s rail infrastructure.
