The Maharashtra government has approved an extension of Metro Line 5A at an estimated cost of INR 4,063 crore, adding a key link to Sindhu Nagar in Ulhasnagar. The project is aimed at improving suburban connectivity in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region by integrating underserved areas into the metro network. The extension is expected to enhance last-mile access, reduce dependence on road-based transport and support transit-oriented development in Ulhasnagar. The approval forms part of ongoing efforts to expand metro infrastructure across the region to address rising commuter demand and urban growth pressures.
The Maharashtra government has approved in the past week the extension of Metro Line 5A at an estimated project cost of INR 4,063 crore, with the addition of a new corridor connecting Ulhasnagar to Sindhu Nagar. The proposed extension will integrate Ulhasnagar into the broader metro framework, addressing connectivity gaps in the eastern suburban belt. The project is expected to provide a direct rail-based transit option for commuters in the area, reducing reliance on road transport and easing congestion on key arterial routes.
Officials indicated that the extension will include the development of a station at Sindhu Nagar, along with associated infrastructure such as elevated tracks, signalling systems and passenger facilities. The project is part of the wider Metro Line 5 network, which is being developed to connect key nodes across Thane, Bhiwandi and Kalyan regions.
The approval reflects ongoing efforts by state authorities to expand metro coverage across the metropolitan region in response to increasing population density and commuting demand. The integration of Ulhasnagar into the metro network is expected to improve accessibility to employment hubs and commercial centres.
The project is also expected to support transit-oriented development in surrounding areas, with improved connectivity often influencing residential and commercial real estate activity. Enhanced public transport infrastructure typically contributes to higher land utilisation and encourages development along transit corridors.
From an infrastructure perspective, the extension is expected to improve network efficiency by linking existing and planned corridors, enabling smoother passenger movement across the metropolitan region. It is also likely to reduce travel time for daily commuters and improve reliability of transit services.
The development aligns with broader urban transport strategies focused on reducing traffic congestion, lowering emissions and promoting the use of mass transit systems.
