The Maharashtra government has initiated steps towards expanding Nanded Airport, with officials directed to conduct surveys and submit a detailed proposal for infrastructure enhancement. The directive was issued during a review meeting led by the district guardian minister, focusing on improving passenger amenities and operational capacity. The proposal will be submitted to the Maharashtra Airport Development Company for further action. Currently, the airport operates flights to seven destinations, highlighting its regional connectivity role. Local representatives have also raised concerns regarding passenger facilities, security and last-mile connectivity. The move reflects efforts to strengthen regional aviation infrastructure and support growing travel demand in central Maharashtra.
The Maharashtra government has initiated the process for expanding Nanded Airport, with officials directed to undertake surveys and prepare a comprehensive proposal aimed at enhancing infrastructure and passenger facilities. The directive was issued earlier in the past week during a review meeting held at the district collector’s office.
The meeting was chaired by the district guardian minister, who instructed officials to expedite the preparation of the proposal and submit it to the Maharashtra Airport Development Company. The proposed plan is expected to address capacity augmentation and improvements in passenger amenities at the airport.
Currently, Nanded Airport operates flights to seven destinations, serving as an important regional aviation hub in central Maharashtra. The expansion initiative is intended to strengthen connectivity and accommodate future growth in passenger traffic.
Officials have been tasked with conducting detailed assessments of existing infrastructure, identifying gaps and outlining requirements for expansion. The proposal is expected to include recommendations related to terminal facilities, operational efficiency and overall passenger experience.
During the review meeting, local stakeholders raised concerns regarding the need for improved passenger services at the airport. Issues highlighted included the need for enhanced security arrangements and better last-mile connectivity, particularly the availability of taxi services to and from the airport.
The expansion plan is expected to be aligned with broader efforts to upgrade regional aviation infrastructure across the state. Improved airport facilities are seen as a key factor in supporting economic activity, tourism and regional development.
The Maharashtra Airport Development Company, which oversees aviation infrastructure projects in the state, will review the proposal once submitted and determine the next steps for implementation. The agency has been involved in developing and upgrading airports across Maharashtra to support increasing air traffic demand.
The move to expand Nanded Airport reflects a growing focus on strengthening connectivity in non-metro regions, where aviation infrastructure plays a critical role in linking cities to larger economic centres. Enhancements in passenger amenities and operational capacity are expected to support increased utilisation of the airport.
The outcome of the proposed expansion will depend on the findings of the survey and subsequent approvals, with authorities aiming to improve service standards and connectivity through a structured development approach.
