• Tata Group-owned IHCL has opened the 6-key Taj Bush Lodge in the Big Five Balule Nature Reserve in Greater Kruger, South Africa.
• The property marks Taj’s entry into South Africa’s luxury safari and wildlife hospitality segment.
• IHCL said the lodge is the first of three Taj wilderness lodges planned for the Greater Kruger region.
• The company aims to strengthen its South African hospitality portfolio by connecting Cape Town tourism with Kruger National Park’s wildlife experience.
• The expansion comes amid rising global demand for experiential travel, safari tourism and luxury nature-based stays.
Indian Hotels Company Ltd (IHCL), the hospitality arm of the Tata Group, has expanded its international portfolio with the opening of Taj Bush Lodge in the Big Five Balule Nature Reserve in Greater Kruger, South Africa. The newly launched property has six keys and marks Taj’s entry into the luxury safari lodge segment in the country.
The lodge is located within the Greater Kruger region, which forms part of one of Africa’s most well-known wildlife tourism circuits. Kruger National Park, spread across nearly two million hectares, is recognised globally for its biodiversity and sightings of wildlife including lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos and buffaloes.
IHCL Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Puneet Chhatwal said Taj’s entry into Greater Kruger brings the brand’s long-standing hospitality legacy into a destination-led wildlife experience. He added that the opening strengthens IHCL’s presence in South Africa and helps extend the country’s tourism itinerary by connecting Cape Town’s scenic and urban tourism with Kruger’s wildlife landscape.
The company already operates Taj Cape Town, which remains one of IHCL’s important international luxury hospitality assets. Over the last few years, IHCL has been steadily expanding its global footprint through luxury hotels, resorts and leisure-focused destinations across markets in Asia, Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
Mark Wernich, Cluster General Manager Operations South Africa and General Manager of Taj Cape Town, said the Bush Lodge would be followed by two additional Taj lodges in the Greater Kruger region in the coming months. The planned expansion is expected to strengthen IHCL’s position in South Africa’s premium wildlife hospitality market.
The launch also comes at a time when experiential tourism and eco-luxury travel continue to gain momentum globally. Safari tourism in South Africa has seen increasing interest from international travellers seeking private stays, nature-based experiences and conservation-focused tourism offerings.
IHCL has been focusing on expanding its presence across leisure destinations as part of its long-term growth strategy. The company has also been increasing the presence of its luxury brand Taj in key international markets while strengthening its portfolio of heritage hotels, resorts and destination properties.
