Synopsis

• Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has directed officials to prepare a comprehensive coastline development plan for the state’s 1,000-km coastal belt.
• The proposed roadmap will focus on coastal infrastructure, investments, employment generation, fisheries and commercial activities linked to the blue economy.
• The government plans to strengthen aquaculture and improve value addition in shrimp and fish exports, where Andhra Pradesh already holds a leading position in India.
• Officials have also been asked to study marine biodiversity protection and explore the potential of rare earth minerals available along the coastline.
• The initiative is expected to support port-led development, industrial growth and economic activity across coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh.

The Andhra Pradesh government is working on a comprehensive coastline development plan aimed at transforming the state’s coastal belt into a major centre for commercial activity, marine trade and blue economy projects. During a review meeting held in Amaravati, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu asked officials and experts to prepare a long-term vision roadmap for the state’s nearly 1,000-km coastline.

The proposed Andhra Pradesh coastline development plan will include studies on infrastructure projects, investment opportunities, employment generation and economic benefits for fishermen and coastal communities. Officials have also been instructed to identify ways to improve industrial and commercial activity along the coastal region while maintaining environmental balance.

Naidu said the global focus on the blue economy and ocean economy has increased because of the large economic potential available through marine resources. He noted that Andhra Pradesh has already developed a strong aquaculture sector and remains one of India’s leading states in marine exports, particularly in shrimp and fish exports.

The Chief Minister stressed the need to improve value addition in aquaculture products to strengthen export revenues and create more opportunities for businesses linked to seafood processing and marine trade. Andhra Pradesh has consistently contributed a major share to India’s seafood exports over the years, supported by its extensive coastline, aquaculture farming network and port infrastructure.

The state government has also been focusing on port-led industrial development in recent years. Andhra Pradesh currently has multiple operational ports and has been promoting logistics, fisheries, warehousing and coastal industrial corridors to attract investments into the maritime sector.

Along with economic development, the government has directed officials to prioritise marine biodiversity protection. Experts have been asked to study measures for sustainable coastal development and ensure that marine ecosystems are protected while expanding industrial and trade-related activities.

Naidu also instructed officials to examine the availability of rare earth minerals in the sea and coastal areas and explore ways to utilise these resources effectively. Rare earth minerals are considered important for sectors such as electronics, renewable energy equipment and advanced manufacturing industries.

The coastline development vision is expected to become part of the state’s larger strategy to strengthen infrastructure, attract investments and increase economic activity across coastal Andhra Pradesh.
