Synopsis

Daman’s new civil airport is expected to become operational in June as authorities prepare to introduce commercial flight connectivity from the Union Territory. Developed at an estimated cost of INR 97 crore, the airport project is aimed at improving regional air connectivity, tourism access and economic activity in Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu. The first phase is expected to include flight services to Delhi, while additional connectivity to Mumbai and Ahmedabad is planned in subsequent stages as part of broader regional infrastructure development efforts.

Daman is expected to begin commercial civil aviation operations from its newly developed airport in June, with authorities planning to introduce passenger flight connectivity to Delhi in the first phase of operations.

According to reports, the airport has been developed at an estimated cost of around INR 97 crore and forms part of infrastructure expansion initiatives being undertaken in the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu. Officials stated that preparations related to operational clearances and passenger services are nearing completion ahead of the proposed launch.

The new airport infrastructure has been developed on Devka Road in Daman and includes a passenger terminal along with supporting aviation facilities. Reports stated that the terminal building covers around 5,460 square metres and includes passenger waiting areas, check-in facilities and a dedicated lounge area.

Authorities indicated that the airport has been designed to handle Airbus A320 category aircraft operations. The project also includes aircraft parking bays and supporting passenger vehicle infrastructure to facilitate commercial operations and future traffic growth.

The first scheduled route from the airport is expected to connect Daman with Delhi. Officials stated that additional services linking Daman with Mumbai and Ahmedabad are also planned in subsequent phases to strengthen regional accessibility and tourism movement.

The airport project is expected to improve connectivity to Daman, which has historically depended largely on road access through neighbouring Gujarat and Maharashtra. Improved air connectivity is expected to support tourism, hospitality and associated economic activity across the coastal Union Territory.

The development also aligns with the Centre’s regional air connectivity initiatives aimed at operationalising underserved airports and improving aviation access to smaller cities and Union Territories. The government has been expanding regional aviation infrastructure under various connectivity programmes to improve mobility and strengthen domestic air networks.

Daman Airport currently functions as an airstrip operated by the Indian Coast Guard and already possesses runway and aviation infrastructure. Civil aviation facilities have now been integrated into the existing infrastructure framework as part of the redevelopment exercise.

Officials stated that final operational arrangements and inauguration-related preparations are underway, with commercial flight operations expected to begin next month.
