Synopsis

• Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation has completed the installation of all 40 stay cables for the under-construction Byculla Cable-Stayed Road Over Bridge in Mumbai.
• The four-lane bridge spans 916 metres and includes a 50-metre-high pylon designed to improve east-west connectivity across Byculla.
• The project is being developed at an estimated cost of around INR 287 crore and is expected to improve traffic movement between South Mumbai, Dadar and the Eastern Express Highway.
• Officials stated that the bridge is in its final phase of construction and is expected to provide weather-resilient connectivity for commuters.

Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (MahaRail) has completed the installation of all 40 stay cables for the under-construction Byculla Cable-Stayed Road Over Bridge (ROB) in Mumbai, marking a major milestone in the execution of the infrastructure project.

According to officials, the bridge is being developed to improve east-west connectivity across Byculla and adjoining areas while easing traffic movement between South Mumbai, Dadar and the Eastern Express Highway. The new structure is being constructed adjacent to the existing century-old Byculla ‘Y’ bridge, which had earlier been declared structurally unsafe following technical assessments.

The cable-stayed bridge is designed as a four-lane structure extending approximately 916 metres and supported by a 50-metre-high central pylon. Officials stated that the project is intended to provide uninterrupted and weather-resilient connectivity for daily commuters travelling through the corridor.

MahaRail said the completion of the stay cable installation represents a significant engineering milestone in the bridge construction process. The stay cables form a critical structural component of cable-stayed bridges by supporting the bridge deck through tension-based load distribution systems.

The project is estimated to cost around INR 287 crore and forms part of broader infrastructure modernisation initiatives being undertaken across Mumbai to replace ageing transport structures and improve urban mobility. Construction work has been carried out in phases to minimise disruption to traffic flow on the busy corridor.

Officials stated that after completion of the new bridge section, traffic movement will be shifted to the new structure, following which portions of the existing bridge will be dismantled and integrated with the redeveloped alignment. The project also includes approach roads and integration with the existing Anna Saheb Patil Flyover and Y-bridge corridor.

The Byculla bridge project has witnessed multiple timeline revisions over the past few years due to logistical and execution-related challenges associated with construction over active railway lines and dense urban traffic corridors. Earlier reports had indicated that the project was targeted for completion by March 2026 after earlier deadlines were revised.

Officials stated that the completed structure is expected to strengthen connectivity within South and Central Mumbai while supporting smoother vehicular movement across one of the city’s key transport links.
