Synopsis

• Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the proposed Samruddhi Expressway extension is expected to improve economic activity and connectivity in eastern Maharashtra.
• The expansion is likely to connect districts such as Gadchiroli, Chandrapur and Gondia with the state’s larger road and logistics network.
• The Samruddhi Mahamarg has already reduced travel time between Mumbai and Nagpur from nearly 16 hours to around eight hours.
• The state government is positioning the expressway corridor as a major infrastructure and industrial development route with logistics parks, warehousing hubs and manufacturing clusters planned along the network.
• The project forms part of Maharashtra’s larger infrastructure push involving highways, ports, industrial corridors and freight connectivity projects.

The Maharashtra government has reiterated its focus on expanding the Samruddhi Expressway network as part of its long-term infrastructure and regional development strategy. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the proposed extension of the Hindu Hrudaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Maharashtra Samruddhi Mahamarg is expected to support economic growth, improve connectivity and create industrial opportunities in districts that have historically seen lower investment and slower infrastructure development.

The proposed extension is expected to improve road connectivity towards eastern Maharashtra, including districts such as Gadchiroli, Chandrapur and Gondia. State officials have earlier indicated that the broader expansion could attract investments of nearly INR 60,000 crore while helping improve logistics movement, industrial activity and employment generation across multiple regions.

The Samruddhi Mahamarg remains one of Maharashtra’s biggest road infrastructure projects. The 701-km access-controlled expressway connects Mumbai and Nagpur and was developed by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC). Following the completion of the final stretch earlier, travel time between the two cities has reduced significantly from nearly 16 hours to around eight hours, improving freight movement and inter-city connectivity.

The state government has been positioning the expressway not only as a transport corridor but also as an economic growth corridor. Officials have earlier stated that industrial nodes, logistics parks, warehousing facilities and agro-processing hubs are planned along several stretches of the expressway to encourage decentralised development outside Mumbai and Pune.

In the past few years, Maharashtra has increasingly focused on large-scale infrastructure projects to strengthen industrial growth and attract investments. Along with the Samruddhi corridor, the government has also been pushing projects related to metro rail, coastal roads, ports, airports and dedicated freight infrastructure. The state administration has repeatedly highlighted connectivity as a key factor for industrial expansion in interior districts.

Recent discussions around infrastructure expansion have also included plans for improved connectivity between Mumbai and mineral-rich regions in Gadchiroli. Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde had earlier spoken about a proposed development expressway linking Mumbai to Surjagad to support industrial and economic activity in tribal and mining regions.

The expressway corridor is also expected to play an important role in Maharashtra’s logistics and freight movement strategy. Officials have previously discussed linking the road network with industrial corridors, inland logistics hubs and upcoming port infrastructure projects, including connectivity linked to the proposed Vadhavan port development.

Land acquisition, environmental approvals and rehabilitation planning continue to remain important aspects of the expansion process. However, officials associated with the project had earlier indicated that preliminary planning work and tender-related activities for certain stretches had already started.
