Government of Bihar has sought an additional INR 1,600 crore from the Centre for implementation of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin scheme. The state said the funds are required to accelerate construction of rural houses, support eligible beneficiaries and clear pending liabilities under the programme. Bihar’s request comes amid continued demand for affordable rural housing and ongoing efforts to improve housing coverage across districts through centrally sponsored housing initiatives.
Government of Bihar has sought INR 1,600 crore from the Centre to support implementation of rural housing projects under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G), citing funding requirements for ongoing construction and pending liabilities under the scheme.
The request was made as Bihar continues to expand rural housing coverage for economically weaker households across districts under the centrally sponsored programme. State officials stated that the additional allocation is necessary to accelerate construction activity and ensure timely completion of sanctioned houses for eligible beneficiaries.
According to officials, Bihar has been implementing rural housing projects under PMAY-G across multiple districts with financial assistance shared between the Centre and the state government. The scheme is intended to provide pucca houses with basic amenities to rural households identified under prescribed socio-economic criteria.
The state government informed authorities that pending fund requirements have increased due to continued construction activity and disbursement obligations linked to approved beneficiaries. Officials indicated that the requested allocation would help address funding gaps and support uninterrupted implementation of the programme.
The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin scheme forms a major component of the Centre’s rural housing policy and aims to improve housing access for low-income households in rural regions. Financial assistance under the scheme is typically released in instalments linked to stages of house construction and beneficiary verification.
Bihar remains among the states with significant demand for affordable rural housing due to its large rural population and ongoing housing shortages in economically weaker sections. The state government has been undertaking construction and beneficiary identification exercises across districts as part of the housing programme’s implementation framework.
Officials stated that the requested INR 1,600 crore allocation would support ongoing projects and facilitate completion of sanctioned units within targeted timelines. The funding is also expected to assist in clearing pending dues related to construction stages already completed by beneficiaries.
The implementation of PMAY-G involves coordination between central and state authorities for fund disbursement, beneficiary approvals, monitoring and progress verification. Rural housing projects under the scheme are also linked to provision of sanitation, electricity and other basic infrastructure facilities.
The Centre periodically reviews allocation requirements submitted by states based on project progress, beneficiary data and utilisation certificates. States with higher housing demand and larger beneficiary bases often seek additional allocations to maintain construction momentum and address pending commitments.
Housing sector observers have stated that continued funding support remains important for sustaining rural housing programmes, particularly in states with large-scale beneficiary requirements and ongoing infrastructure deficits. The Bihar government’s request reflects continuing demand for public housing support in rural areas and the financial requirements associated with large-scale housing implementation programmes.
