Synopsis

The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation has announced a 10 per cent reduction in water supply across its jurisdiction and parts of the CIDCO node from May 25 due to declining water levels in the Morbe dam reservoir. The civic body said the move was taken as a precautionary step following forecasts of deficient monsoon conditions linked to El Niño and the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD). Evening water supply will remain suspended twice a week in different nodes including Belapur, Nerul, Vashi, Ghansoli and Airoli. Authorities stated that there is currently no immediate shortage, but conservation measures are necessary to manage supplies for this year and the next.

The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation has started implementing a 10 per cent water reduction across Navi Mumbai and select CIDCO areas after water levels in the Morbe dam reservoir continued to decline. The civic body said the measure came into effect from May 25 as a precautionary step to ensure water availability for a longer duration.

According to the municipal corporation, the decision was taken after considering weather forecasts issued by the India Meteorological Department regarding the possibility of a deficient monsoon due to El Niño and Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) conditions. The move also follows directions issued by the Maharashtra government on water management and conservation.

Navi Mumbai receives daily water supply mainly from Morbe dam along with Barvi dam managed by the Maharashtra authority. The total storage capacity of Morbe dam stands at 190.890 DLGM, while the available usable water stock has dropped to 36.470 DLGM, which is around 19.11 per cent of the reservoir’s usable capacity.

Civic officials clarified that there is sufficient water available at present and residents do not need to panic. However, authorities said careful planning has become necessary considering rising temperatures in the Navi Mumbai and Morbe dam regions, which have increased evaporation levels from the reservoir.

The municipal corporation added that the water reduction would continue until satisfactory rainfall is received in the Morbe dam catchment area and reservoir levels improve. Officials also noted that the administration is closely monitoring reservoir conditions and continuing regular planned water distribution across the city.

As part of the conservation plan, evening water supply will remain suspended twice a week in different nodes under the civic body’s jurisdiction. In Belapur, supply will remain shut on Mondays and Thursdays, while Nerul and Koparkhairane will face shutdowns on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Turbhe and Ghansoli will see cuts on Wednesdays and Sundays, while Vashi will have closures on Thursdays and Mondays.

In Airoli, evening water supply will remain suspended on Fridays due to possible shutdown activity linked to the Maharashtra authority’s supply system. Digha’s supply schedule will depend on the probable shutdown programme of the state authority.

The civic body also confirmed that water supply from Morbe dam to the CIDCO nodes of Kharghar and Kamothe will remain completely shut on Fridays as part of the revised water management plan.

The latest move comes as several civic bodies across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region have been reviewing reservoir levels and introducing precautionary measures ahead of the monsoon season. In previous years, local authorities had adopted similar rotational water cuts during periods of delayed rainfall and lower dam reserves.

The municipal corporation has appealed to residents across Navi Mumbai, Kharghar and Kamothe to use water carefully and cooperate with authorities in maintaining stable water supply operations during the restriction period.
