Synopsis

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is planning to widen the Lucknow-Sitapur section of NH-30 from four lanes to six lanes to accommodate rising traffic volumes and improve regional connectivity in Uttar Pradesh. The tendering process for the project is expected to begin by December 2026 after completion of surveys and project planning activities. Officials stated that the highway currently handles more than 40,000 vehicles daily, resulting in traffic congestion and slower movement during peak hours. The widening work is proposed largely within the existing alignment, reducing the need for additional land acquisition.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is preparing to widen the Lucknow-Sitapur section of NH-30 into a six-lane highway, with the tendering process for the project expected to commence by December 2026, according to officials familiar with the development.

The proposed highway expansion is aimed at easing traffic congestion and improving connectivity between Lucknow and key districts in Uttar Pradesh’s Terai region, including Sitapur, Hardoi and Lakhimpur Kheri. Officials stated that the existing four-lane highway has been witnessing increasing vehicular pressure due to rising passenger and freight movement along the corridor.

According to project details cited in reports, the Lucknow-Sitapur road stretch handles more than 40,000 vehicles daily, leading to congestion and longer travel time, particularly during peak traffic hours. The six-laning proposal forms part of broader infrastructure expansion initiatives being undertaken to strengthen road connectivity across Uttar Pradesh.

Officials indicated that the proposed widening work is expected to be executed largely within the existing highway alignment, thereby limiting the requirement for fresh land acquisition. The approach is intended to reduce project implementation challenges and accelerate execution timelines. Surveys and technical assessments linked to the project are currently underway.

Reports stated that preliminary project planning and feasibility studies have already been initiated, while detailed project reports and cost estimates are expected to be finalised before the tender process begins. Authorities are also assessing traffic density, access requirements and road safety provisions as part of the planning exercise.

NHAI officials indicated that the highway expansion would improve travel efficiency and reduce congestion for commuters travelling between Lucknow and northern districts of the state. The corridor also serves as an important connectivity route for agricultural produce transportation and regional trade movement.

The widening proposal comes amid multiple highway capacity augmentation projects being undertaken across Uttar Pradesh under central road infrastructure programmes. The state has witnessed significant investments in expressways, national highways and logistics connectivity projects aimed at improving inter-city mobility and freight movement.

According to reports, authorities are simultaneously undertaking encroachment removal and service road improvement works along parts of the existing corridor to facilitate future widening activity. The project is expected to include upgraded junctions, service lanes, safety infrastructure and improved traffic management systems once execution begins.
