Synopsis

• Thiruvananthapuram International Airport’s expansion project has moved to the environmental clearance review stage before major redevelopment work can begin.
• The proposed expansion includes Terminal 2 redevelopment, parking facilities, commercial spaces and infrastructure upgrades under Project Anantha.
• Delays in the approval process are linked to the expiry of Kerala’s State Environment • Impact Assessment Authority tenure and procedural reviews.
• Adani Airport Holdings is leading the airport modernisation plan to increase passenger handling capacity and improve regional connectivity.
• The airport redevelopment is also expected to support tourism, cargo movement and integration with the nearby Vizhinjam International Seaport.

Thiruvananthapuram International Airport’s expansion project has entered the environmental clearance review stage, delaying the start of major redevelopment work planned at the airport. The proposal is currently being examined by regulatory authorities before final approvals are issued for construction activities linked to the next phase of airport modernisation.

The planned expansion is part of the airport’s broader redevelopment programme under Project Anantha, which focuses on upgrading passenger infrastructure, operational systems and commercial facilities. The project includes expansion and modernisation of Terminal 2, development of parking infrastructure, retail zones, hospitality projects and improved passenger handling systems.

Airport authorities had submitted the environmental clearance application earlier, but the proposal recently moved to the appraisal stage after procedural verification. Reports stated that the delay was mainly due to the expiry of the tenure of Kerala’s State Environment Impact Assessment Authority (SEIAA), following which several pending proposals were shifted temporarily for review at the central level.

Officials associated with the process stated that the proposal now requires detailed examination by the State Environment Impact Assessment Committee before a final environmental clearance can be issued. The review process includes assessment of environmental impact, compliance requirements and supporting technical documents related to the airport redevelopment project.

The airport, operated by Adani Airport Holdings since 2021 under a concession agreement with Airports Authority of India, has been undergoing phased infrastructure upgrades over the last few years. Passenger traffic growth and rising tourism activity in Kerala have increased the need for capacity expansion and improved airport facilities.

Project Anantha is expected to play a major role in transforming the airport into a larger regional aviation hub. Apart from terminal redevelopment, the long-term plan also includes multi-level car parking, commercial office spaces, upgraded air traffic infrastructure, food and retail areas and hospitality facilities within the airport premises.

The redevelopment is also being seen as important for improving connectivity with the nearby Vizhinjam International Seaport, which is expected to strengthen logistics, tourism and cargo movement in the region once operational activity increases further.

Some infrastructure work linked to the airport redevelopment has already progressed over the past year. Environmental approval was granted earlier for a luxury hotel project planned within the airport campus, while selected air-side infrastructure upgrades including apron and drainage-related works have also moved ahead in phases.

Industry observers believe the environmental clearance process will be important in deciding the timeline for the airport’s next stage of expansion. Once approvals are secured, authorities are expected to move forward with large-scale construction and terminal redevelopment activities aimed at increasing the airport’s overall passenger handling capacity and operational efficiency.
