Delhi’s Public Works Department (PWD) is set to introduce a QR code-based road grievance management system under its ‘Know Your Road’ initiative to improve transparency and public access to road maintenance information. The project will cover nearly 1,400 km of PWD-managed roads across the capital. Citizens will be able to scan QR codes installed on road signboards to check contractor details, maintenance history and complaint status, while also registering complaints directly without downloading an app. The department has approved a tender for the project and plans to begin with a pilot at 100 locations before expanding it across Delhi.
The Delhi Public Works Department (PWD) is preparing to introduce a QR code-enabled road grievance management system to improve monitoring, complaint resolution and transparency across roads maintained by the department in the national capital.
The initiative, named ‘Know Your Road’, will allow residents to access detailed information related to specific road stretches by scanning QR codes placed on roadside signboards. The move is part of the Delhi government’s larger effort to bring technology into civic infrastructure management and improve public participation in road maintenance.
Under the proposed system, QR codes will be installed across nearly 1,400 km of PWD-maintained roads in Delhi. Citizens scanning the codes will be able to access details including road construction records, maintenance history, contractor names, engineer information and ongoing repair updates. The system will also allow users to register complaints directly and track the status of grievance redressal in real time.
According to officials, the platform is being designed without the need for a separate mobile application, making it easier for the public to use. The department has already approved a tender for developing the digital platform, dashboard and QR code infrastructure.
An integrated online dashboard will also be created for monitoring complaints and tracking response timelines. Officials believe the system can help improve accountability among contractors and field engineers while giving residents greater visibility into road maintenance work being carried out in their areas.
The department has stated that despite continuous spending on road infrastructure and repairs, there has been limited public access to maintenance records and complaint tracking mechanisms. The new QR-based system is expected to create a direct communication channel between citizens and the PWD, helping authorities identify recurring issues such as potholes, damaged stretches, drainage concerns and delayed repair works more efficiently.
The first phase of the project will begin at around 100 locations across Delhi before being expanded in stages to cover the wider road network. PWD Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh had announced the initiative earlier this year while outlining plans to modernise road management systems and improve civic service delivery through digital tools.
The latest development also builds on previous steps taken by the department to digitise road infrastructure monitoring. Earlier this year, the PWD had introduced QR codes on retro-reflective road signboards to provide public access to details related to signage quality, manufacturing specifications and maintenance schedules.
Several states have been increasingly adopting technology-led systems for road monitoring and complaint management. Haryana has already implemented a digital road complaint tracking mechanism through its ‘Mhari Sadak App’, which uses geo-tagging and online tracking to monitor repair works and citizen grievances.
Urban infrastructure experts believe digital monitoring systems can help improve response efficiency and create better transparency in public works projects, particularly in large cities where road maintenance complaints remain frequent.
