Synopsis

Nitin Gadkari reviewed the progress and quality of maintenance work across 4,178 km of National Highway projects in Assam during a high-level meeting held on Wednesday. The review was initiated following feedback and concerns raised through media and social media platforms regarding highway conditions and project execution. During the meeting, the Union minister directed officials to accelerate implementation work, strengthen monitoring systems and adopt modern construction practices to improve road durability and ride quality. He also instructed authorities to undertake advance monsoon preparedness measures, including drainage strengthening, slope protection and rapid response systems, to minimise disruptions and improve commuter safety across critical highway corridors in the state.

Nitin Gadkari on Wednesday reviewed the quality and progress of maintenance work covering 4,178 km of National Highway projects in Assam during a high-level meeting convened by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, according to an official statement.

The review was undertaken following concerns and feedback received through media reports and social media platforms regarding the condition, execution quality and maintenance of highway stretches in the state.

During the meeting, Gadkari stressed the need to accelerate on-ground execution of maintenance and repair activities while ensuring stricter quality control mechanisms across ongoing projects. He directed officials to adopt modern construction and maintenance practices aimed at improving asset durability and overall riding quality on National Highway corridors.

The minister also instructed officials to strengthen monitoring systems to ensure timely implementation and maintain construction standards across all identified stretches. The review focused on operational efficiency, maintenance quality and preparedness ahead of the monsoon season, which frequently impacts road infrastructure across Assam and the wider north-eastern region.

According to the statement, Gadkari emphasised the importance of advance monsoon preparedness measures to reduce traffic disruptions and enhance commuter safety. Officials were directed to prioritise the development of robust drainage systems, undertake slope protection works in vulnerable areas and establish rapid response mechanisms for emergency situations during periods of heavy rainfall.

The directions come amid increasing focus on improving highway resilience and maintenance standards in regions prone to flooding, landslides and weather-related infrastructure stress. Assam’s highway network plays a critical role in regional connectivity and freight movement across the north-eastern states, making maintenance and operational continuity particularly important during the monsoon period.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has been undertaking large-scale highway development and upgradation projects across the Northeast in recent years, with a focus on improving interstate connectivity, logistics efficiency and access to border regions. Maintenance quality and project execution timelines have increasingly come under scrutiny as road traffic volumes and infrastructure investments continue to rise.

The latest review reflects the Centre’s emphasis on ensuring that operational highways maintain construction quality standards and remain functional during adverse weather conditions. Authorities were also asked to ensure that preventive maintenance and monitoring mechanisms are implemented proactively to minimise infrastructure deterioration and disruptions during the upcoming monsoon season.
