Synopsis

Indian Railways has approved a key infrastructure project worth INR 993 crore for doubling the Arakkonam–Chengalpattu section, a major corridor in the Chennai suburban rail network. The 68-km stretch is part of one of the busiest commuter routes in Tamil Nadu, connecting important suburban and industrial zones. The project aims to improve capacity, reduce congestion, and enhance punctuality of suburban train services. It is also expected to support freight movement across the region, strengthening overall rail connectivity and operational efficiency in the Chennai rail division.

Indian Railways has approved a major rail infrastructure development project involving the doubling of the Arakkonam–Chengalpattu railway line in Tamil Nadu, with an estimated cost of INR 993 crore. The project forms a crucial upgrade within the Chennai suburban rail network, which handles high passenger volumes on a daily basis.

The 68-km route is one of the most heavily used suburban stretches, connecting key points such as Chennai Beach, Tambaram, Chengalpattu, and Arakkonam. Due to increasing commuter demand, the section has been operating under significant congestion, affecting both passenger and freight train movement.

With the approval of the doubling project, Indian Railways aims to improve line capacity and reduce operational delays on this high-density corridor. The addition of a parallel track is expected to support smoother train movement, better scheduling, and improved punctuality across suburban services.

The corridor also plays an important role in freight transportation across Tamil Nadu, particularly for industrial goods such as cement, automobiles, and agricultural commodities. The upgrade is expected to enhance freight efficiency along with passenger service improvements.

The execution of the project is expected to be carried out in phases to ensure that regular suburban and long-distance train operations are not significantly disrupted during construction.
