• The Municipal Corporation of Delhi has extended the deadline for flattening the Okhla landfill for the fifth time.
• The revised timeline now pushes the expected completion to October 2026.
• The delay is mainly due to slow biomining progress and limited processing capacity of legacy waste.
• Operational challenges and seasonal disruptions, including monsoon impact, have also affected the pace of work.
• The landfill remains part of Delhi’s ongoing waste remediation programme across major landfill sites.
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has once again extended the deadline for flattening the Okhla landfill site, marking the fifth revision of the project timeline. The updated schedule now targets completion around October 2026, reflecting continued delays in clearing legacy waste.
The extension has been required due to slow progress in biomining activities and the limited capacity available for processing large volumes of accumulated waste. Officials have noted that the pace of work has not matched earlier projections, leading to repeated revisions of the completion timeline.
The Okhla landfill, one of Delhi’s major waste dumping sites, has been under long-term remediation efforts as part of the city’s broader waste management plan. Despite ongoing operations, fresh waste inflow continues to add pressure on the clearance process, affecting overall progress.
Operational constraints have also contributed to the delay. Fluctuations in daily waste handling capacity and reduced efficiency during monsoon periods have slowed down excavation and segregation work at the site. These factors have collectively impacted the expected timelines set in earlier phases of the project.
Authorities have confirmed that biomining and waste segregation work is still active at the site. However, the gap between planned targets and actual progress has led to multiple extensions over time.
The Okhla landfill remains part of a larger municipal effort covering multiple landfill sites across the city, where similar waste reduction and biomining projects are underway.
