• GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd has commissioned Cargo Terminal 2 at Hyderabad International Airport to address rising domestic and international cargo demand.
• The new facility spans 16,864 sq m and has been designed with an initial annual handling capacity of 50,000 metric tonnes, expandable to 100,000 metric tonnes.
• The terminal includes dedicated import and export processing zones, cold-chain infrastructure for pharmaceutical cargo, temperature-controlled storage and upgraded cargo handling systems.
• The development is aimed at strengthening Hyderabad’s position as a major pharmaceutical and logistics hub while improving cargo turnaround efficiency and regulatory processing timelines.
• The facility forms part of broader infrastructure expansion initiatives being undertaken by the GMR Group at Hyderabad airport and its surrounding aerocity ecosystem.
GMR Group has commissioned Cargo Terminal 2 at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, expanding cargo infrastructure capacity at one of India’s busiest aviation hubs. The facility was launched by GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd in the past week to accommodate increasing domestic and international freight movement through Hyderabad.
The new terminal has been developed across 16,864 sq m and will begin operations with an annual cargo handling capacity of nearly 50,000 metric tonnes. Airport officials stated that the infrastructure has been planned with future scalability provisions that could increase capacity to around 100,000 metric tonnes in subsequent phases.
According to the company, the terminal has been designed to improve operational efficiency for airlines, freight forwarders, logistics operators and regulatory agencies operating at the airport. The facility includes separate inbound and outbound cargo zones, dedicated export and import processing areas, multi-level racking systems and expanded build-up and breakdown areas to enable simultaneous cargo processing.
A significant component of the project is its pharmaceutical and perishable cargo handling infrastructure. The terminal includes a fully temperature-controlled pharma zone equipped with continuous monitoring systems and temperature cut-off mechanisms intended to maintain cold-chain integrity during cargo movement. Airport officials said the facility was developed in response to Hyderabad’s growing role in pharmaceutical manufacturing and exports.
Kadhir Kadhiravan, Chief Executive Officer of GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd, stated that the commissioning of the second cargo terminal represented a major step in Hyderabad’s emergence as an air cargo and logistics gateway in Asia. He indicated that the facility had been developed to support specialised cargo segments including pharmaceuticals, perishables and express consignments requiring time-sensitive handling.
Sanjiv Edward, Chief Executive Officer of GMR Aero Cargo & Logistics, said the terminal would strengthen India’s air logistics infrastructure and support value-added cargo services in the region.
The company stated that the facility has also been integrated with upgraded airside and landside connectivity infrastructure, dedicated road access systems and reinforced power backup arrangements to support uninterrupted cargo operations. The terminal additionally incorporates energy-efficient lighting systems, optimised HVAC infrastructure and insulated temperature-controlled areas as part of the airport operator’s sustainability measures.
Hyderabad airport handled more than 167,000 tonnes of cargo between April 2024 and March 2025, according to publicly available airport traffic data. The latest cargo terminal expansion comes amid continued infrastructure investment by GMR across airport-linked logistics, commercial and aerocity developments surrounding the Hyderabad airport ecosystem.
