• BMC has set a June 2026 deadline to open the long-delayed Vidyavihar east-west flyover in Mumbai.
• The 650-metre flyover will connect LBS Marg and Ramkrishna Chemburkar Marg over Vidyavihar railway station.
• The project has faced repeated delays due to encroachments, construction hurdles and tree-cutting approvals.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is preparing to complete the long-pending Vidyavihar east-west flyover project in Mumbai, with civic officials targeting opening of the corridor before the onset of the 2026 monsoon season. Multiple media reports stated that the flyover, first proposed more than three decades ago, is now in the final stages of construction.
The two-lane flyover is being constructed over Vidyavihar railway station within the limits of Mumbai’s N Ward and is designed to connect Lal Bahadur Shastri (LBS) Marg on one side with Ramkrishna Chemburkar Marg on the other. The project aims to improve east-west connectivity in the central suburbs, where motorists currently rely on the Ghatkopar and Kurla road overbridges to cross the railway corridor.
According to BMC officials cited in reports, the total length of the structure is around 650 metres, including a 100-metre bridge section above railway tracks, along with eastern and western approach roads measuring approximately 220 metres and 330 metres respectively.
The flyover proposal was first incorporated into BMC’s Development Plan regulations in 1991, while tenders for construction were floated in 2016. Construction activity began thereafter but the project encountered repeated delays linked to land acquisition, encroachments, traffic diversion challenges and utility shifting works.
Reports published in recent weeks also highlighted environmental concerns linked to the project. BMC has proposed removal and transplantation of more than 200 trees to facilitate construction of approach roads and associated infrastructure works. According to civic officials, compensatory plantation activities are planned in Panvel and other parts of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) Abhijit Bangar recently reviewed the construction progress and directed officials to complete critical works before the monsoon period. Civic authorities stated that work on the eastern side of the corridor has substantially progressed, while the western section continues to face operational difficulties due to nearby residential and commercial structures and road realignment requirements
The project is expected to provide a direct east-west link for commuters travelling through Vidyavihar and adjoining areas, reducing dependence on existing railway crossings and easing congestion on nearby arterial roads. At present, commuters travelling between the eastern and western sides of the locality often experience travel times of 30 to 45 minutes during peak traffic hours.
