The Delhi government is considering a substantial increase in financial assistance for the maintenance and development of parks and gardens across the national capital, including a proposal to provide 100 per cent funding for eligible projects undertaken by RWAs, NGOs and registered societies. The proposal includes raising annual maintenance support from INR 2.55 lakh per acre to INR 3.8 lakh per acre and increasing one-time assistance for development of new parks from INR 1 lakh per acre to INR 2.9 lakh per acre. Additional grants of up to INR 2.5 lakh per acre have also been proposed for upgrading existing parks and civic amenities. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta stated that the initiative is aimed at strengthening Delhi’s green cover, improving urban environmental conditions and encouraging greater community participation in neighbourhood park management.
The Delhi government is planning to significantly enhance financial assistance for the upkeep and development of parks and gardens across the city as part of a broader initiative aimed at strengthening urban green infrastructure and increasing community participation in public space management.
According to official statements issued by the Chief Minister’s Office, the proposed measures include increased annual maintenance grants, higher financial support for development of new parks and the possibility of introducing full government funding for eligible projects undertaken by Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs), non-government organisations (NGOs) and registered societies.
The financial support is currently disbursed through the Delhi Parks and Gardens Society (DPGS), which functions under the Delhi government’s environment department and provides assistance for maintenance and development of public green spaces across the capital.
Under the revised proposal, annual maintenance assistance for parks may increase from INR 2.55 lakh per acre to INR 3.8 lakh per acre. Officials stated that the revision has been proposed in view of rising maintenance expenses, labour costs, irrigation requirements and increasing operational expenditure associated with maintaining urban green spaces.
The government is also considering replacing the current 90:10 cost-sharing structure with a fully government-funded model for eligible projects. Under the existing framework, participating organisations are required to contribute 10 per cent of the total project cost. Officials stated that the revised proposal is intended to encourage wider participation from smaller RWAs and local organisations that may face financial constraints under the current system.
In addition, the Delhi government has proposed increasing one-time financial assistance for development of new parks from INR 1 lakh per acre to INR 2.9 lakh per acre, particularly in newly developed residential colonies and densely populated urban areas where access to green spaces remains limited.
The proposal also includes one-time grants of up to INR 2.5 lakh per acre for upgrading existing parks. According to officials, the funds may be utilised for installation and improvement of facilities such as display boards, dustbins, irrigation pipelines and related civic infrastructure aimed at improving cleanliness, usability and environmental sustainability within public parks.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta stated that strengthening Delhi’s green cover remained a priority for the government and indicated that improved park infrastructure would contribute towards pollution control and enhancement of the city’s urban environment. She further stated that long-term maintenance of neighbourhood parks would require active participation from local communities and civic organisations.
The proposed measures form part of the government’s wider urban sustainability and environmental improvement initiatives, with officials indicating that the programme aligns with the broader ‘Viksit Delhi’ vision focused on balancing infrastructure development with environmental conservation and quality-of-life improvements.
