Synopsis

Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation has appealed to residents in the Airoli and Belapur assembly constituencies to cooperate with the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) programme being conducted by the Election Commission of India to update and verify electoral rolls. The exercise aims to align the 2024 voter list with the final electoral roll prepared in 2002 through a voter mapping process. Maharashtra Chief Electoral Officer S. Chockalingam recently reviewed the progress of the initiative during a visit to the Navi Mumbai civic headquarters and instructed officials to accelerate the verification process. Booth Level Officers (BLOs) have been tasked with correcting duplicate, incomplete and invalid voter records while conducting field-level verification. Citizens have been advised to confirm their voter record mapping through the BLO application and provide accurate information during household verification visits.

Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has called upon residents across the 150 Airoli and 151 Belapur assembly constituencies to actively cooperate with the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) programme aimed at updating and verifying electoral rolls ahead of future elections.

The exercise is being conducted under the supervision of the Election Commission of India to improve the accuracy, transparency and reliability of voter records. According to civic officials, the programme seeks to map and verify entries from the 2024 electoral rolls against the final voter list prepared during the last special intensive revision exercise conducted in 2002.

As part of the review process, Maharashtra Chief Electoral Officer S. Chockalingam recently visited the NMMC headquarters and held discussions with Municipal Commissioner Dr Kailas Shinde and other election officials regarding the status of the verification programme. During the review meeting, officials were instructed to accelerate the voter mapping and verification exercise within stipulated timelines.

Subsequently, additional municipal commissioner Sunil Pawar convened a special review meeting with election registration officers for the Airoli and Belapur assembly constituencies along with assistant election registration officers and departmental officials. Senior civic officials from the election, education and health departments also attended the meeting.

According to the administration, Booth Level Officers (BLOs) have been assigned responsibility for conducting field-level verification and ensuring that electoral data is updated accurately within prescribed timelines. The BLO workforce includes employees from municipal departments, government agencies, semi-government bodies, teachers and ASHA workers engaged in election-related duties.

Officials stated that instances had emerged where certain appointed BLOs had either failed to report for duty or had not performed assigned responsibilities despite receiving appointment orders. Instructions were issued during the meeting to initiate legal action against personnel found neglecting election-related duties.

The verification process currently involves identifying and correcting incomplete, distorted or unclear voter photographs, removing irrational or duplicate entries and verifying demographically similar records to prevent duplication within the electoral rolls.

Civic officials stated that local cooperation from political party representatives, municipal corporators and Booth Level Agents (BLAs) would be necessary to ensure smooth execution of the programme. Political parties and elected representatives have been requested to assist BLOs in reaching residents and collecting accurate voter information.

The administration further stated that residents should verify whether their names were included in the 2002 electoral rolls. Citizens whose names were not present due to age-related reasons have been advised to establish lineage verification through the voter records of parents or grandparents and submit the necessary information to BLO officials for online mapping through the BLO application.

According to the civic administration, names that cannot be verified or mapped during the exercise may face deletion from electoral rolls in future stages of the revision programme. Officials stated that voters whose names are removed would subsequently need to undergo a fresh voter registration process for re-inclusion in the electoral list.

NMMC has therefore urged all eligible residents within the Airoli and Belapur constituencies to ensure that their details are correctly mapped within the BLO application system and to cooperate fully with field officers conducting household verification visits.
