Synopsis

• South Western Railway has extended the completion deadline for the Bengaluru Cantonment-Whitefield rail quadrupling project to March 2027 due to construction and land-related challenges.
• The 19-km corridor project, approved in 2018 at INR 492 crore, has now seen its estimated cost rise to around INR 664.5 crore.
• Nearly 75 per cent of the work has been completed, including commissioning of the Cantonment-Byappanahalli section.
• The upgraded rail corridor is expected to improve suburban train movement, reduce congestion and support additional MEMU services across Bengaluru.
• Station redevelopment and infrastructure upgrades are also underway at Whitefield and KR Pura railway stations.

South Western Railway has pushed the completion timeline for the Bengaluru Cantonment-Whitefield rail corridor quadrupling project to March 2027 as work continues across key stretches of the route. The corridor is among the busiest rail sections in Bengaluru and connects central parts of the city with eastern technology and residential hubs including Byappanahalli, KR Pura, Hoodi and Whitefield.

The project, covering around 19 km, was sanctioned in 2018 with an estimated investment of INR 492 crore. It was originally planned for completion within a few years to improve railway capacity and support Bengaluru’s growing suburban rail movement. However, multiple execution challenges and rising construction costs have delayed progress, taking the revised project cost to nearly INR 664.5 crore.

Railway officials stated that around 75 per cent of the work has already been completed. The first section between Bengaluru Cantonment and Byappanahalli West Cabin, stretching around 5 km, has already been commissioned and is operational. Work is currently progressing on the remaining 14-km stretch between Byappanahalli and Whitefield, which includes additional track laying, signalling works and station infrastructure upgrades.

Officials explained that construction activity within Bengaluru city limits has remained difficult due to dense urban development, limited railway land availability and utility shifting work. Movement of heavy construction equipment in congested areas also slowed execution in several sections. Yard remodelling at Byappanahalli, KR Pura and Whitefield stations further added to the construction timeline. In many stretches, retaining walls had to be constructed because of space constraints near the railway corridor.

The quadrupling project is expected to significantly improve train operations on the route once completed. At present, around 47 up and 47 down train services operate daily between Bengaluru Cantonment and Byappanahalli. Between Byappanahalli and Whitefield, nearly 40 up and 40 down services are currently being handled every day. Railway authorities stated that with the addition of a dedicated Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU) rake, the corridor could support around 14 additional up and 14 down suburban services daily, excluding maintenance blocks.

The upgraded line is also expected to reduce travel time between Cantonment and Whitefield to nearly 35 minutes, which could benefit office commuters travelling towards Bengaluru’s eastern IT corridor. Railway officials indicated that the enhanced corridor capacity would also help in future expansion of suburban services towards Tumakuru, Hosur and Kuppam based on passenger demand and operational feasibility.

Alongside track expansion, redevelopment work is progressing at key railway stations on the route. At Whitefield railway station, platform shelters, parking facilities, landscaping work and a food plaza building have already been completed. Construction of a 12-metre-wide foot overbridge is currently underway to improve passenger movement within the station premises.

At KR Pura station, new vehicle parking facilities, pay-and-use toilets and a VIP lounge have been completed, while work on additional platform shelters and a third-entry station building is continuing. Railway authorities are also planning upgrades at Banaswadi station to support additional MEMU maintenance facilities in the future.

The delay in the quadrupling project comes as several transport and suburban rail infrastructure projects in Bengaluru continue to face timeline revisions due to land acquisition issues, tender-related delays and construction challenges within densely populated urban areas. The broader Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project has also witnessed revised schedules for a few major corridors over the past few years as infrastructure agencies continue work across multiple locations simultaneously.
