Synopsis

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has approved an INR 14,926 crore rail expansion project to add third and fourth lines on the 403 km Ghaziabad–Sitapur corridor in Uttar Pradesh. The project, part of a broader INR 24,815 crore multi-tracking package, aims to ease congestion on a high-density route within the Delhi–Guwahati network. Covering multiple industrial districts, the expansion is expected to enhance passenger and freight movement, improve logistics efficiency, and support regional economic activity. The project will be implemented under the PM Gati Shakti framework with completion targeted in the coming years.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has approved an INR 14,926 crore railway expansion project to add third and fourth lines on the Ghaziabad–Sitapur corridor, with the decision taken earlier this week as part of a broader infrastructure push to enhance rail capacity across high-density routes in India.

The project involves expansion of the existing 403 km double-line section into a four-line corridor, covering a total track length of approximately 859 km. It forms part of a larger INR 24,815 crore package of two multi-tracking projects aimed at strengthening rail infrastructure across Uttar Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh.

The Ghaziabad–Sitapur route is a critical segment of the Delhi–Guwahati High Density Network (HDN-4), where current capacity utilisation has already reached around 168 per cent and is projected to exceed 200 per cent without expansion. The additional lines are expected to decongest the corridor and improve operational efficiency for both passenger and freight services.

The alignment passes through key districts including Ghaziabad, Hapur, Amroha, Moradabad, Rampur, Bareilly, Shahjahanpur, Lakhimpur Kheri and Sitapur, connecting several industrial clusters involved in sectors such as machinery, electronics, textiles, handicrafts and thermal power generation.

Officials indicated that the project is designed to improve connectivity between northern and eastern India, while also supporting movement of key commodities such as coal, cement, foodgrains, fertilisers, steel and container cargo. Enhanced capacity is expected to facilitate faster freight movement and reduce logistics costs across the corridor.

The expansion has been planned under the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, with a focus on integrated infrastructure development and multi-modal connectivity. The project is also expected to improve access to key tourist and religious destinations along the route, including Naimisharanya and Garhmukteshwar.

As part of the development, new bypass alignments and additional stations are proposed to reduce congestion at existing nodes and streamline operations. The project is expected to generate significant employment during construction and support long-term economic activity in the region.

The Ghaziabad–Sitapur expansion forms part of the government’s wider strategy to increase rail network capacity, improve service reliability and align transport infrastructure with growing freight and passenger demand, particularly on high-traffic corridors linking major economic centres.
