Synopsis

Authorities are preparing a comprehensive traffic management overhaul around key Bhopal Metro station zones to address congestion and improve last-mile connectivity. The plan targets high-density corridors across the Orange and Blue lines, including MP Nagar, Jawahar Chowk and Nadra Bus Stand, where metro construction and limited road capacity have disrupted traffic flow. Measures include road widening, signal optimisation, pedestrian infrastructure upgrades and designated drop-off zones. With funding of around INR 30 crore proposed for road works, the initiative aims to integrate metro operations with city traffic systems and improve commuter movement across key transit nodes.

Authorities in Bhopal are planning a comprehensive redesign of traffic management systems around key metro station zones, as part of efforts to streamline vehicular movement and improve last-mile connectivity in areas affected by ongoing metro operations, according to developments reported earlier this week.

The initiative targets high-traffic locations along both the Orange and Blue metro corridors, including MP Nagar, Jawahar Chowk, Board Office intersection, Pul Bogda, Nadra Bus Stand and Prabhat Square, where congestion has intensified due to metro construction and constrained road infrastructure.

The proposed measures include widening of roads, synchronisation of traffic signals, creation of designated bus stops and improvement of pedestrian infrastructure around station areas. Authorities are also planning dedicated drop-and-go zones near metro stations, discouraging long-term parking to ensure smoother passenger movement and reduce vehicular buildup.

In certain high-density zones such as Bhopal Junction and Nadra Bus Stand, underground realignments are being considered to minimise disruption at surface level and improve traffic circulation. The proposals have been shared with multiple agencies, including the Bhopal Municipal Corporation, traffic police, Public Works Department and the urban administration department for approvals and coordinated execution.

The plan forms part of a broader urban mobility strategy aligned with long-term development goals, focusing on integrating metro infrastructure with city traffic systems. Around INR 30 crore has been earmarked for road-related works under the proposal, aimed at addressing peak-hour congestion and improving safety in critical junctions.

The need for intervention has been driven by persistent bottlenecks in metro-linked corridors, where incomplete pedestrian infrastructure, limited road widths and ongoing construction activities have affected traffic flow and commuter accessibility. Previous assessments had also flagged gaps in approach roads, signage and crossing facilities around metro stations, raising concerns over user safety and efficiency.

Bhopal Metro’s priority corridor, operational since late last year, spans around 6 km between Subhash Nagar and AIIMS, covering key commercial and institutional hubs. The expansion of metro infrastructure across additional corridors is expected to further increase commuter volumes, necessitating coordinated traffic planning.

Officials indicated that the redesigned traffic framework is intended to support seamless integration between metro services and surface transport modes, including buses and intermediate public transport. The focus remains on improving accessibility while reducing congestion at critical nodes.

The proposed overhaul reflects a shift towards integrated urban transport planning in Bhopal, where metro development is being aligned with road infrastructure upgrades to support efficient movement across rapidly growing urban corridors.
