Synopsis

Authorities in Varanasi carried out demolition of over 30 buildings as part of an ongoing road widening and infrastructure upgrade project aimed at easing congestion and improving connectivity. The drive forms part of a broader plan to expand key stretches into multi-lane corridors, with projects estimated at several hundred crore INR. The exercise was conducted under tight security, following earlier legal and administrative clearances. Officials indicated that the cleared land will be utilised to improve road capacity and streamline traffic movement in high-density areas. The development reflects continued urban infrastructure push in the city, although such projects also bring displacement and rehabilitation concerns into focus.

Authorities in Varanasi intensified infrastructure development efforts earlier this week by demolishing portions of more than 30 buildings to facilitate a major road expansion project aimed at easing traffic congestion and improving urban mobility.

The demolition drive was undertaken by the Public Works Department (PWD) with the support of local administration and police, who maintained tight security arrangements during the operation. Heavy machinery, including bulldozers and earthmovers, was deployed to clear identified structures in key stretches earmarked for widening.

The exercise forms part of a larger road infrastructure plan involving the conversion of existing stretches into wider, multi-lane corridors. One such project includes the six-laning of the Mohansarai–Varanasi Cantonment corridor, with an estimated cost of around INR 410 crore. The broader objective is to improve connectivity between major transport nodes, including railway stations and arterial city routes, while reducing travel time and congestion in high-density zones.

In several cases, demolition had been delayed due to legal challenges raised by property owners regarding land ownership and compensation. Officials indicated that the process resumed after courts permitted the continuation of demolition following submission of necessary documentation by the authorities.

Parallel demolition actions have also been reported in areas such as Dalmandi, where road widening aims to expand narrow stretches to improve access and redistribute traffic load across the city’s core areas. These operations have similarly involved identification of multiple structures for clearance and have been carried out under strict supervision, including deployment of security personnel and surveillance mechanisms.

Officials maintained that only the required portions of land are being acquired for infrastructure purposes and that safety protocols are being followed during execution. At the same time, the scale of demolition highlights the complexities associated with urban redevelopment in historically dense cities like Varanasi, where infrastructure upgrades often intersect with existing settlements and commercial establishments.

The road expansion projects are part of a broader push to modernise urban infrastructure in Varanasi, a city witnessing sustained investment in transport, connectivity, and civic improvements. With multiple projects underway, authorities are seeking to balance development objectives with legal compliance and stakeholder concerns, even as the pace of execution accelerates.
