Indian Hotels Company (IHCL) has signed a 70-key greenfield Gateway hotel in Dirang, Arunachal Pradesh, as part of its expansion into emerging leisure destinations. The development reflects rising tourism demand in the region, supported by improved accessibility and natural landscape appeal. With this addition, IHCL's portfolio in the North East will increase to 21 hotels, including 12 under development. The development, announced in the past week, will be undertaken in partnership with Phurpa Tsering and is positioned to cater to increasing demand from leisure travellers and adventure tourists visiting the region. Dirang, known for its natural landscape and improving connectivity, has been witnessing a gradual rise in tourism activity, prompting hospitality operators to explore new developments.
According to IHCL, the project will be developed as a greenfield property and will offer 70 keys along with amenities aligned with the Gateway brand's positioning in the upscale hospitality segment. The company indicated that the location's scenic environment and accessibility improvements have contributed to its emergence as a potential hospitality destination.
Suma Venkatesh, executive vice president for real estate and development at IHCL, stated that the signing reflects the company's focus on expanding into new and underpenetrated markets. She indicated that Dirang is seeing increasing interest from travellers seeking nature-based and experiential tourism offerings, and that the project aligns with IHCL's broader development strategy.
With the addition of the Dirang property, IHCL's portfolio in the North East region will increase to 21 hotels, including 12 properties currently under development. The company has been actively expanding its footprint in the region, which has seen rising tourism interest supported by infrastructure improvements and government initiatives to promote travel.
The North East has emerged as a focus area for hospitality development, driven by its natural attractions, cultural diversity and improving connectivity through road, rail and air infrastructure. Operators are increasingly targeting such locations to cater to evolving travel preferences, particularly among domestic tourists seeking alternative destinations.
IHCL's Gateway brand is positioned to serve upscale travellers and is typically deployed in locations with strong leisure or business potential. The Dirang project is expected to cater to both segments, including tourists and visitors associated with local economic activity.
The signing underscores the continued expansion of organised hospitality players into smaller towns and emerging tourism corridors, where demand is gradually increasing. IHCL's growing presence in the North East reflects a strategic push to build a diversified portfolio across established and developing markets in the country.
