The construction of three underpasses at Mukarba Chowk in north Delhi is nearing completion and is expected to open soon, aiming to ease congestion at one of the city's busiest intersections. The project includes two vehicular underpasses and one for pedestrians and non-motorised users, improving connectivity between Rohini, Badli, Azadpur and Jahangirpuri. Designed to handle around 15,800 vehicles daily, the project is expected to reduce travel time by up to 10 minutes. It will also help lower fuel consumption and emissions while improving pedestrian safety and traffic flow on the Outer Ring Road.

Work on the Mukarba Chowk underpass project in north Delhi has reached its final stage, with only minor finishing activities pending before it is opened for public use. The project is expected to provide relief at a junction that regularly faces heavy traffic due to its strategic location on the Outer Ring Road.


The development consists of three underpasses, including two dedicated to vehicular movement and one designed for pedestrians and non-motorised transport. The aim is to separate traffic flows and reduce congestion at the intersection, which connects several high-density areas and industrial zones.

The project was taken up as part of a broader effort to decongest the Outer Ring Road corridor, which carries a large share of daily city traffic. Construction began in 2022 and has now reached around 98 per cent completion. Officials indicated that the remaining work mainly involves finishing touches, road markings, and final safety checks.

Connectivity between key areas such as Rohini, Badli, Azadpur and Jahangirpuri is expected to improve significantly. At present, vehicles often depend on the existing flyover and surface-level intersections, leading to delays during peak hours. The new underpasses will allow smoother and more direct movement, reducing travel distance by nearly 1 km in certain stretches.

Traffic authorities expect the corridor to handle close to 15,800 vehicles per day once operational. The improved design is likely to cut travel time by up to 10 minutes, especially during peak traffic periods when congestion at Mukarba Chowk affects adjoining roads as well.

The project has been executed using jack pushing technology with precast reinforced cement concrete structures. This method helped reduce disruptions to ongoing traffic during construction, which was critical given the location�s heavy vehicle movement, including freight traffic from nearby industrial areas and interstate routes.

Environmental benefits have also been factored into the project. Authorities estimate that the improved traffic flow will help save nearly 58,000 litres of fuel annually and reduce carbon emissions by about 135 tonnes each year. These gains are linked to reduced idling time and smoother vehicle movement at the junction.

A dedicated pedestrian underpass has been included to address safety concerns in the area. The junction has seen high pedestrian movement but lacked safe crossing infrastructure, increasing the risk of accidents. The new facility is expected to improve accessibility and safety for daily commuters.

Drainage and slope design have been incorporated to prevent waterlogging, which has been a recurring issue in this stretch during the monsoon season. Officials stated that these measures are aimed at ensuring that the underpasses remain functional even during heavy rainfall. The project also aligns with ongoing efforts to improve traffic conditions at other major bottlenecks across Delhi through targeted infrastructure upgrades.
