Synopsis

The Lucknow Kanpur Expressway has introduced a flat toll of INR 275 for cars, with a return journey within 24 hours priced at INR 475. An annual pass costing INR 3,075 has also been launched, allowing up to 200 trips and lowering the effective per-trip cost for regular commuters. The access-controlled corridor is expected to reduce travel time between the two cities to under an hour and ease congestion on the existing highway. The pricing structure is aimed at balancing commuter convenience with operational costs while promoting smoother traffic flow.

The LucknowKanpur Expressway has implemented a flat toll rate of INR 275 for cars for a one-way journey, moving away from the earlier per-kilometre pricing model. For those making a return trip within 24 hours, the combined toll has been fixed at INR 475, offering a slight cost advantage over paying separately for two one-way trips.

An annual pass has also been introduced at INR 3,075 for private vehicles. This pass allows up to 200 trips in a year, bringing down the average cost per trip significantly for daily commuters travelling between the two cities. The pass is linked to the FASTag system and is aimed at enabling seamless movement through toll plazas while reducing stoppage time.

The expressway has been developed as a six-lane access-controlled corridor with provision for future expansion to eight lanes. It is designed to handle increasing traffic volumes between Lucknow and Kanpur, which are among the busiest urban centres in the state. With a maximum speed limit of 120 kmph, the corridor is expected to reduce travel time to under an hour, compared to longer durations on the existing route.

Initial discussions around the project had suggested a lower toll of around INR 125 per trip. However, the final rate has been set higher, considering the improved road infrastructure, access control features, and overall project cost. The revised pricing reflects the higher standard of construction and maintenance associated with expressway-grade roads.

The project is also expected to divert a considerable portion of traffic from the older highway, which often faces congestion during peak hours. By shifting traffic to a faster and more efficient corridor, authorities expect better traffic distribution and reduced pressure on existing infrastructure.

In addition to the expressway, upcoming infrastructure such as the Kanpur Ring Road is expected to further strengthen connectivity in the region. This will help streamline movement not only between Lucknow and Kanpur but also for vehicles passing through the broader network.
