MMRDA welcomed a high-level Austrian delegation led by Austria's Minister for Economy, Energy and Tourism Wolfgang Hattmannsdorfer at its Bandra-Kurla Complex headquarters in Mumbai. Devendra Fadnavis interacted virtually and encouraged participation in infrastructure and sustainable urban development, aligned with Maharashtra's long-term economic vision. A Letter of Intent was handed over outlining cooperation in tunneling, technology transfer, skills development, tourism and institutional partnerships. The delegation also visited Atal Setu and reviewed emergency services, expressing satisfaction with the infrastructure standards and operational readiness.
At the headquarters of MMRDA in Bandra-Kurla Complex, Mumbai, a senior Austrian delegation was received by Metropolitan Commissioner Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee. The delegation was led by Wolfgang Hattmannsdorfer, Minister for Economy, Energy and Tourism of the Republic of Austria, and included the Austrian Ambassador to India Robert Zischg, along with officials from Austrian federal ministries, Advantage Austria, the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber, academic institutions and industry representatives.
During the interaction, Devendra Fadnavis joined virtually from the MMRDA headquarters and encouraged Austrian institutions and companies to participate in Maharashtra's infrastructure development, innovation ecosystem and sustainable urban planning initiatives. He also referred to the state's broader economic objective of moving towards a 1 trillion USD economy through structured global partnerships.
A key development during the visit was the handover of a Letter of Intent to the Metropolitan Commissioner of MMRDA by the Austrian Union Minister. The document reflects interest in structured cooperation across multiple sectors and lays the foundation for future formal engagement between both sides.
The proposed areas of collaboration include skill development in tunneling and underground infrastructure, technology transfer, innovation-driven projects, educational and institutional cooperation, tourism development, and broader economic and industrial partnerships. The framework is also expected to support long-term engagement between Austrian organisations and agencies working in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
Devendra Fadnavis stated that Maharashtra is focused on building strong global partnerships for infrastructure-led growth and sustainable development. He noted that Austria's expertise in engineering and technology could support key urban projects in the region and expressed openness to long-term cooperation in infrastructure, investment and innovation.
Deputy Chief Minister and MMRDA Chairman Eknath Shinde mentioned that Maharashtra continues to position itself as a preferred destination for international collaboration. He added that ongoing large-scale infrastructure work under MMRDA is creating opportunities for global partnerships that can further support regional development.
Metropolitan Commissioner Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee stated that growing international interest in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region reflects confidence in its infrastructure programme. He highlighted that recent global engagements, including discussions held earlier at Davos, have encouraged more countries and organisations to explore collaboration with MMRDA. He added that cooperation in mobility systems, tunneling, skill development and innovation would be key focus areas going forward.
During the visit, the Austrian delegation also visited Atal Setu and observed the scale of infrastructure development in the region. The delegation was briefed on emergency services systems, following which they expressed satisfaction with the operational preparedness and infrastructure quality.
The engagement forms part of ongoing efforts by MMRDA to build structured international partnerships focused on infrastructure development, knowledge exchange and sustainable urban growth in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
