The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is progressing with a road-widening project along SV Road in Andheri, where 502 structures have been marked for removal to ease congestion. The work is being executed in three phases under DCPR provisions, with the first phase largely completed. Authorities have encouraged partial voluntary demolition by property owners to speed up the process. The stretch remains a key traffic corridor in the western suburbs, and past similar drives across Mumbai indicate a continued focus on removing bottlenecks and improving road capacity.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is carrying out a road-widening project along Swami Vivekanand Road in Andheri, where a total of 502 structures have been identified for removal to reduce traffic congestion on this important suburban route. The action is being implemented under the Development Control and Promotion Regulations (DCPR 33(12B)), which allows the civic body to clear road setbacks and widen existing carriageways.
Work on the first phase covered the stretch between the JP Road junction and Ceasar Road junction, where 196 structures were affected. Most of these structures have already been removed, with only a few pending cases. Officials from the K West ward indicated that the demolition work was carried out in two stages, with part of the work completed before the monsoon last year and the remaining after the monsoon period.
Instead of relying entirely on civic action, the BMC encouraged property owners to voluntarily remove the portions of their structures that extended beyond the designated road line. Officials explained that this approach helped reduce resistance and made execution smoother, especially in a densely built-up area like Andheri where delays are common in such projects.
The second phase of the project will focus on 119 structures located between Ceasar Road and the Farukh High School junction near Kevni Pada. The third phase will extend further up to the Oshiwara river, where 215 more structures fall within the alignment planned for widening. These phases are expected to be taken up in sequence to ensure minimal disruption to daily traffic movement.
SV Road is one of the main arterial roads in Mumbai's western suburbs, running parallel to the suburban railway line and connecting multiple residential and commercial areas. The stretch in Andheri has remained a congestion point due to narrow carriage width, heavy vehicular movement, and roadside encroachments. Its proximity to the Versova-Ghatkopar Metro corridor has further increased traffic pressure in the area.
Civic officials also indicated that road widening along SV Road has been under consideration for several years, with repeated efforts made to remove bottlenecks at key junctions. Similar clearance drives have been undertaken in other parts of Mumbai in the past, including stretches in the eastern suburbs, to improve traffic flow and road capacity.
The current exercise is being closely monitored at the ward level to ensure coordination between departments and to avoid delays. Authorities have maintained that cooperation from stakeholders will remain important for completing the remaining phases without major hurdles.
