Synopsis

The tender process for preparing the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for Nagpur Metro Phase III has progressed to the evaluation stage, with two firms submitting bids for the consultancy assignment. Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MahaMetro) has initiated technical scrutiny of the proposals, after which financial bids will be opened before awarding the contract. The DPR will define the scope of the proposed Phase III expansion, which is expected to be the largest addition to the Nagpur Metro network, covering multiple new corridors including Inner Ring Road, Sitabuldi Koradi, Butibori extension, and New Nagpur connectivity. Once a consultant is appointed, groundwork for surveys and planning is expected to commence next month, forming the basis for subsequent state and central approvals.

The Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MahaMetro) has moved to the evaluation stage of the tender process for appointing a consultant to prepare the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for Nagpur Metro Phase III in recent days, following the receipt of bids from two firms, with groundwork for the report expected to begin next month.

According to officials, the tender process for the DPR consultancy has closed, and technical evaluation of the submitted bids is currently underway. Once this stage is completed, financial bids will be opened, after which the contract will be awarded to the selected agency.

The DPR assumes significance as it will serve as the blueprint for Phase III, which is proposed to be the most extensive expansion of the Nagpur Metro network to date. The planned corridors include routes along the Inner Ring Road, the Sitabuldi Koradi stretch, an extension towards Butibori, and connectivity to the emerging New Nagpur region.

Officials indicated that, upon appointment of the consultant, on-ground DPR activities are expected to commence next month. These will include traffic and ridership surveys, origin destination studies, topographical assessments, and alignment planning. The findings from these exercises will determine key aspects such as route alignment, station locations, interchanges, and the proportion of elevated and underground sections.

The DPR will also outline integration with existing metro corridors, ensuring continuity between the operational Phase I network and the ongoing Phase II expansion. The document is expected to define operational, technical, and financial parameters, forming the basis for investment decisions and implementation planning.

Phase III has been conceptualised under the city's Comprehensive Mobility Plan and is expected to significantly expand the metro network footprint. Previous planning documents indicate that the expansion could add over 50 km of corridors, linking industrial zones such as Butibori and emerging urban clusters in New Nagpur with established parts of the city.

Once finalised, the DPR will be submitted to the Maharashtra state government for approval, followed by review at the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. These approvals are necessary before the project can move into execution, including funding allocation and construction planning.

The progression of the DPR tender marks a preparatory milestone for the next phase of Nagpur's metro expansion, even as Phase II works continue across multiple corridors. The upcoming studies and planning exercises are expected to establish the framework for future infrastructure development and connectivity across the city's expanding urban and industrial areas.
