The Dehradun administration has cancelled registrations of 17 homestays after inspections found multiple violations of Uttarakhand’s homestay rules. The action followed complaints about misuse of residential properties for commercial purposes and activities affecting public order. Authorities identified issues such as lack of fire safety systems, missing licences, improper guest record maintenance, and illegal leasing to third parties. Several units were also found operating beyond permitted capacity or without valid approvals. The administration has started removing these listings from official platforms and indicated that further checks will continue.
The Dehradun district administration has cancelled the registrations of 17 homestays after identifying serious violations during a recent inspection drive. The action is part of ongoing efforts to regulate the sector and ensure that such properties operate within the defined framework. Advertisement
The inspections were carried out across multiple areas including Sahaspur, Raipur, Niranjanpur, Ballupur and parts of Mussoorie. Officials found that several homestays were not functioning as per the intended purpose of the scheme. Instead of being owner-operated residential units, many were being run as full-scale commercial establishments similar to hotels or event venues.
Authorities indicated that complaints had been received about late-night parties, unauthorised gatherings and other activities causing disturbance in residential areas. During the checks, it was found that some operators had allowed such activities, raising concerns related to law and order and misuse of the homestay policy.
Multiple compliance gaps were identified during the inspections. Several properties lacked basic fire safety equipment and had not obtained required clearances such as food licences. In many cases, the owners were not staying at the premises and had leased the properties to third parties, which is not allowed under the homestay scheme guidelines.
Officials also found lapses in record-keeping. A number of homestays failed to maintain proper guest registers, and mandatory reporting requirements for foreign visitors were not followed in certain cases. Some units were operating beyond the approved number of rooms, while others had not renewed their registrations within the required timelines.
In a few instances, authorities observed that the properties were either non-operational or had undergone changes in ownership without informing the concerned department. These factors contributed to the decision to cancel registrations, as they indicated a broader pattern of non-compliance rather than isolated issues.
The administration has begun the process of removing these homestays from official tourism listings and has made it clear that enforcement will continue. More inspections are expected in the coming days, and additional action may be taken against other properties found violating the rules.
This development comes amid increasing scrutiny of the homestay sector in Uttarakhand. Over the past few years, there have been concerns that some operators are using the scheme to run commercial hospitality businesses without adhering to regulations. Authorities have been gradually tightening checks to ensure that the original objective of promoting local culture and supplementary income for residents is not diluted.
