The Telangana government has directed officials to complete the allocation of 2BHK houses to eligible beneficiaries by the end of the ongoing month, as part of efforts to accelerate housing delivery under state schemes. The instruction, issued in the past week by Housing Minister Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy, emphasises prioritising completed and near-complete units while ensuring strict beneficiary verification. The move follows concerns over vacant houses, delays in allotment and irregularities in earlier phases. Authorities have also been asked to address ineligible occupancy and streamline the allocation process, with financial assistance and infrastructure support continuing under the broader Indiramma housing framework.
The Telangana government stated in the past week that it has directed officials to complete the allocation of all double-bedroom (2BHK) houses to eligible beneficiaries by the end of the ongoing month, with a focus on expediting delivery under its affordable housing initiatives.
Housing Minister Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy, during a review of ongoing projects, instructed district administrations to prioritise the allotment of completed and near-complete housing units while ensuring that beneficiary identification is finalised without delay. The directive aims to address gaps in earlier implementation phases, including delays in allotment and the presence of vacant units across several districts.
Officials indicated that the government is placing emphasis on verifying eligibility criteria to ensure that houses are allotted strictly to qualified beneficiaries. The minister directed district collectors to remove ineligible occupants where identified and reassign such units to deserving applicants, with involvement of local representatives in the process.
The housing programme forms part of the state’s broader effort to provide free or subsidised housing to economically weaker sections, with the 2BHK scheme designed to replace informal settlements and improve living conditions. The initiative has previously faced challenges, including a significant number of unoccupied units, often attributed to location constraints and delays in beneficiary onboarding.
To address construction gaps, the government has also introduced financial support mechanisms under the Indiramma housing framework, allowing beneficiaries to complete partially built homes where contractors have not progressed. Assistance of up to INR 5 lakh is being provided, alongside infrastructure support for housing clusters.
Authorities have been instructed to maintain transparency in the allocation process and prevent irregularities, particularly in billing and beneficiary selection. The minister indicated that poverty remains the primary eligibility criterion and that strict monitoring will be undertaken to ensure compliance across districts.
The directive comes amid efforts to streamline the state’s housing delivery system, including reallocation of unused units and closer coordination between district administrations and implementing agencies. Officials stated that regular reviews will continue to track progress and ensure that pending allocations are completed within the stipulated timeline.
The move reflects a renewed push by the state government to operationalise existing housing stock and improve delivery efficiency, while aligning beneficiary allocation with the objectives of its affordable housing programmes.
