North Western Railway has received a record allocation of over INR 10,000 crore for the current financial year, marking a sharp rise in investment compared to the past decade. The zone has delivered strong operational performance, with over 18 crore passengers and record freight loading of 30.53 million tonnes. Ongoing projects worth more than INR 55,000 crore are under execution, focusing on track expansion, doubling, signalling, and station upgrades. The increased funding is expected to improve connectivity, support economic activity, and accelerate infrastructure development across Rajasthan.
North Western Railway has been allocated more than INR 10,000 crore for the current financial year, the highest ever for the zone. The funding highlights a continued increase in railway investment in Rajasthan, with the allocation now nearly 15 times higher than levels seen about a decade ago. This rise reflects a consistent push to expand and modernise rail infrastructure across the state.
The zone recorded strong operational performance in the past financial year. It handled over 18 crore originating passengers, showing steady growth in travel demand across regions. Freight loading reached 30.53 million tonnes, the highest so far, indicating increased movement of goods linked to agriculture, cement, minerals, and other industries in Rajasthan.
Financially, the zone reported gross earnings of INR 8,622 crore. This was supported by passenger revenue, freight services, parcel movement, and other commercial activities. To manage peak demand, around 8,000 special train trips were operated during festivals and busy travel periods. Punctuality also improved, with mail and express trains achieving more than 93 percent on-time performance, reflecting better operational efficiency.
Infrastructure development continues at a fast pace across the zone. Projects worth over INR 55,000 crore are currently under execution. These include new railway lines, track doubling, gauge conversion, electrification, and station redevelopment works. Officials indicated that faster approvals and better coordination have helped in improving project execution timelines.
During the past year, about 123 km of new lines and doubling works were completed. Over the last decade, the railway network in Rajasthan has expanded significantly, with nearly 3,900 km of tracks laid. At present, more than 1,500 km of new lines and doubling projects are under different stages of construction, while additional projects are in planning and survey stages.
Signalling systems have also been upgraded to improve safety and efficiency. More than 300 km of automatic signalling has been commissioned so far, with a notable portion completed in the past year itself. These upgrades are helping in handling higher traffic with better reliability and reduced delays.
The railway network in Rajasthan has seen a gradual transition from earlier limitations such as metre gauge lines and slower routes in remote areas. Increased investment over the years has supported electrification, introduction of faster trains, and improved connectivity between key cities and smaller towns. Services such as Vande Bharat trains on select routes have also been introduced to enhance passenger experience.
Officials stated that the focus remains on improving connectivity in remote and underserved regions, increasing freight capacity, and upgrading passenger facilities. The railway network is also expected to support tourism and regional industries by providing more reliable and faster transport options.
