Hindustan Power has received environmental clearance from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change for a proposed 2×800 MW transitional power project at Anuppur, Madhya Pradesh. The approval enables the company to move ahead with the second phase of its existing thermal power plant, which already has 1,200 MW operational capacity. The expansion will add 1,600 MW to the project, strengthening regional power infrastructure. The development reflects continued capacity addition in transitional energy as India balances renewable expansion with grid stability and rising electricity demand across industrial and urban centres.
Hindustan Power has received environmental clearance from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) for its proposed 2×800 MW transitional power project at Anuppur in Madhya Pradesh, enabling the company to proceed with the second phase of its existing thermal power facility.
The approval, announced in the past week, marks a key regulatory step for the expansion of the Anuppur power plant, where the company already operates a 1,200 MW coal-based project. With the latest clearance, the proposed expansion—aggregating 1,600 MW—will move into the next stage, including detailed engineering and execution planning, subject to further approvals.
Hindustan Power had commissioned the first phase of the Anuppur project between 2015 and 2016, with two units of 600 MW each. The facility has since contributed to regional electricity supply and capacity creation, supporting industrial and urban demand in the state and adjoining regions.
The company’s leadership indicated that the environmental approval provides the necessary regulatory backing to advance the expansion phase and increase overall generation capacity within its portfolio. It was conveyed that the Anuppur project forms a significant component of the company’s asset base and that the focus would now be on timely execution of the second phase.
The management further stated that transitional energy projects continue to play a role in maintaining reliable power supply, particularly in the context of rising electricity demand and increasing integration of renewable energy into the grid. It was highlighted that such projects are required to ensure stability in power systems, especially as variability from renewable sources grows.
The company also emphasised that the expansion would be undertaken with consideration for environmental safeguards, in line with regulatory requirements. It noted that projects such as the Anuppur plant are expected to contribute to balancing the broader energy mix while supporting long-term infrastructure needs.
Hindustan Power entered the thermal energy segment in 2008 and has since developed generation assets across conventional and renewable energy segments. The Anuppur plant remains one of its key operational projects, and the proposed expansion is expected to strengthen its presence in transitional power generation.
The development comes at a time when India continues to expand its energy capacity across multiple sources, with thermal power projects maintaining a role in ensuring base-load supply alongside growing renewable installations.
