The review covered approximately 7,926 km of National Highways in Karnataka and 1,513 km across 61 projects in Kerala. The assessment was undertaken following feedback received through media reports and social media platforms regarding the condition and upkeep of highway infrastructure in the two states.
During the meeting, the minister emphasised the need for strict adherence to quality standards in construction and maintenance activities. He also highlighted the importance of timely execution of ongoing projects to ensure efficient utilisation of infrastructure and minimise delays.
Officials were directed to accelerate on-ground work and strengthen monitoring mechanisms to ensure compliance with prescribed quality benchmarks. The minister stressed the adoption of advanced construction technologies and modern engineering practices to improve the durability of road assets, enhance riding quality, and support seamless connectivity across key corridors.
A significant focus of the review was on preparedness ahead of the monsoon season, particularly in regions prone to heavy rainfall. The minister instructed officials to undertake advance planning to mitigate potential disruptions caused by adverse weather conditions.
This includes comprehensive drainage management systems to prevent waterlogging, slope protection measures in vulnerable stretches, and the establishment of quick-response mechanisms to address emergencies. These steps are aimed at ensuring road safety, maintaining structural integrity, and enabling uninterrupted traffic movement during the monsoon period.
The minister also underscored the importance of preventive maintenance and proactive monitoring to reduce risks associated with infrastructure deterioration. Strengthening response systems and ensuring readiness at project sites were identified as key priorities to minimise disruptions and enhance commuter safety.
The review reflects continued oversight of highway infrastructure development and maintenance, particularly in high-traffic regions, with an emphasis on improving construction quality and ensuring operational efficiency across the National Highway network.
