Synopsis

Western Railway’s Ratlam Division reported solar energy generation of 35.53 lakh units during FY26, resulting in estimated savings of INR 1.84 crore in electricity costs. The division has installed solar power systems with a cumulative capacity of around 3,300 kilowatts across stations, depots, and administrative buildings. The initiative forms part of broader efforts to reduce dependence on conventional energy sources and improve operational efficiency. Officials indicated that the expansion of rooftop solar installations will continue, contributing to cost optimisation as well as environmental objectives, including reduction in carbon emissions across railway infrastructure.

Western Railway’s Ratlam Division generated 35.53 lakh units of solar energy during the financial year ended recently, resulting in savings of approximately INR 1.84 crore in electricity expenditure, according to officials.

The division has installed solar power plants with a combined capacity of around 3,300 kilowatts across multiple operational and administrative locations. These installations are spread across station buildings, platform cover sheds, offices, and coaching depots, reflecting a distributed approach to renewable energy deployment within railway infrastructure.

According to Mukesh Kumar, Public Relations Officer of the Ratlam Division, the solar installations contributed to significant cost savings during the year, while also supporting the division’s efforts to reduce reliance on conventional power sources. He indicated that the programme has been expanded progressively, with additional installations being planned to increase generation capacity.

The initiative is part of broader measures undertaken by Indian Railways to improve energy efficiency and reduce operating costs across its network. By utilising rooftop and on-site solar infrastructure, the division has been able to generate electricity at source, lowering dependence on grid power and mitigating exposure to fluctuating energy costs.

Officials noted that the deployment of solar energy systems also contributes to environmental objectives, including reduction in carbon emissions and promotion of sustainable infrastructure practices. The installations are designed to support both operational requirements and administrative functions, ensuring consistent utilisation of generated power.

The division has indicated that it will continue to expand solar capacity in a phased manner, with a focus on optimising available infrastructure for renewable energy generation. This includes identifying additional sites for installation and integrating solar systems into existing and upcoming railway assets.

The adoption of renewable energy solutions across railway zones reflects a broader policy direction towards sustainability in infrastructure management. In the case of the Ratlam Division, the measurable savings achieved during the financial year highlight the financial and operational benefits of such initiatives, alongside their contribution to environmental goals.
