Pune Municipal Corporation has approved a set of new Metro route proposals aimed at strengthening connectivity to Pune’s peripheral areas, following a general body decision taken recently to expand the city’s mass transit network.


The approved proposals include corridors connecting Khadakwasla to Donaje, Katraj to Khed Shivapur, Katraj to Undri, and Wagholi to Lonikand. These routes are intended to integrate developing outskirts with established urban centres, while also supporting connectivity to key destinations such as Sinhagad Fort and proposed infrastructure projects including the outer ring road.

The proposals will now be submitted to Maha Metro for the preparation of detailed project reports (DPRs), which will determine technical feasibility, alignment planning, and cost estimates for each corridor.

Civic officials indicated that the expansion of the Metro network is aligned with Pune’s ongoing urban growth, particularly in peripheral zones witnessing increased residential development and population inflow. The proposed corridors are expected to address mobility gaps by providing structured public transport access to these areas.

The move also complements ongoing and planned Metro expansions under subsequent phases of the Pune Metro project, which aim to extend connectivity across multiple growth corridors. Existing and under-construction lines have already established linkages between key residential, commercial, and institutional hubs, with further extensions planned to accommodate rising commuter demand.

Officials noted that the development of these new corridors is part of a broader strategy to reduce dependence on road-based transport, alleviate congestion, and improve travel efficiency across the city. By linking peripheral areas with the core network, the Metro expansion is expected to support balanced urban development and reduce travel time for daily commuters.

The proposals were supported by elected representatives, who highlighted the need to strengthen public transport infrastructure in newly urbanising areas. Civic authorities have indicated that coordination with state agencies and Metro authorities will be critical to advancing the next stages of project planning and implementation.
