India’s peak electricity demand saw a slight easing over the weekend after touching a new record high a day earlier. The demand fell to 238.15 gigawatts as commercial and industrial activity slowed due to widespread closures. Supply levels remained close to demand, though a small shortfall was recorded. Data from the power authorities indicated that demand has been steadily rising compared to last year and is expected to increase further with rising temperatures. The India Meteorological Department has indicated a harsh summer, with higher use of cooling systems likely to push consumption higher in the coming weeks.
India’s peak power demand declined over the weekend to 238.15 GW, easing from the record level of 256 GW recorded in the previous session. The moderation was mainly linked to reduced electricity consumption as most commercial and industrial establishments remained shut.
Official data from the Power Ministry showed that the highest electricity supply met during the day stood at 237.21 GW, which resulted in a marginal shortfall of 0.93 GW. This placed the overall peak demand at 238.15 GW for the day.
The demand had surged to an all-time high of 256 GW in the previous session, surpassing the earlier record of 252.07 GW registered just a day before that. This reflects a sharp upward trend in electricity consumption over a short period.
In comparison, last summer’s peak demand reached 242.77 GW during June, which remained below the government’s projection of 277 GW. In the preceding year, the highest demand stood at 250 GW in May, which had itself crossed the earlier record of 243.27 GW set in September 2023.
Officials and experts have indicated that electricity demand is expected to remain on an upward trajectory through the summer season. The India Meteorological Department has projected intense heat conditions this year, which are likely to increase the use of cooling appliances such as air conditioners and desert coolers.
Electricity usage has already shown an upward movement during the month. The highest supply recorded was 239.70 GW on one day, which further increased to 240.12 GW on the following day. In the initial half of the month, peak demand remained slightly lower compared to the same period last year, when it had reached 235.32 GW.
