India’s peak power demand rose to a seasonal high of 240 GW in the past week, driven by rising temperatures and increased use of cooling appliances across residential and commercial segments. Data from the power ministry showed peak demand met at 240.12 GW, marking the highest level so far this summer. The surge follows fluctuating demand trends earlier in the month and comes as heatwave conditions intensify across multiple regions. Experts expect demand to rise further, potentially nearing previous highs recorded in 2023 and 2024. The government has projected peak demand to reach around 270 GW this summer, indicating continued pressure on energy infrastructure.
India’s peak power demand reached a seasonal high of 240.12 GW in the past week, driven by rising temperatures and increased consumption of electricity for cooling, according to data released by the Ministry of Power.
The highest supply in a single day, referred to as peak demand met, rose marginally from 239.70 GW recorded a day earlier, reflecting a steady upward trend in electricity consumption as heat conditions intensified across several parts of the country. The surge is attributed to increased use of air-conditioners, air coolers and other electrical appliances by both residential and commercial users.
Power demand trends during the month have shown fluctuations before the recent spike. In the earlier part of the month, peak demand remained below the 235.32 GW recorded during the same period last year. However, demand levels increased progressively, reaching 234.81 GW in mid-month before climbing to 238.94 GW the following day.
Subsequent days saw demand stabilise around similar levels, with 238.80 GW recorded shortly after, before a temporary dip to 225.69 GW. The demand then recovered, rising again to over 237 GW and maintaining levels above 236 GW in the following days, before reaching the current peak.
Experts indicated that electricity demand is expected to rise further in the coming days as temperatures continue to increase and heatwave conditions persist. According to the India Meteorological Department, heatwave conditions are likely to prevail across large parts of northwest, central and eastern India over the near term, contributing to higher energy consumption.
Historical data shows that India’s all-time peak power demand reached around 250 GW in May 2024, while a previous high of 243.27 GW was recorded in September 2023. During the last summer season, peak demand touched 242.77 GW in June but remained below the government’s projection of 277 GW for that period.
For the current summer, the power ministry has estimated peak demand to reach approximately 270 GW, suggesting further stress on generation and distribution systems if consumption trends continue upward.
The sustained rise in electricity demand highlights the growing impact of temperature-driven consumption patterns, particularly in urban and semi-urban areas, where cooling requirements form a significant share of overall energy usage.
