The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is developing a 12-km, four-lane greenfield bypass in Uttarakhand to improve connectivity with the Delhi-Dehradun Economic Corridor. With around 44 per cent construction completed, the INR 716 crore project is aimed at diverting non-destined traffic away from Dehradun city. The access-controlled highway will serve as an alternate south-western route, linking key industrial and regional hubs. Once operational, it is expected to reduce congestion and pollution while improving connectivity to neighbouring states such as Haryana, Punjab and Himachal Pradesh.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has taken up the construction of a 12-km, four-lane greenfield, access-controlled bypass in Uttarakhand to strengthen connectivity along the Delhi-Dehradun Economic Corridor and ease traffic pressure within Dehradun.
According to an official statement, the project involves developing a new alignment starting from Jhajhra. It will connect the Paonta Sahib–Ballupur section of National Highway-7 and extend up to the Delhi-Dehradun Economic Corridor near the Asharori check post in Dehradun district.
The project is being executed at an estimated cost of INR 716 crore. NHAI stated that around 44 per cent of the physical work has already been completed, indicating steady progress on the ground. The bypass is scheduled for completion by April 2027.
Designed as a fully access-controlled national highway, the corridor will function as an alternate south-western route for traffic that does not need to enter the city. This will help divert vehicles away from Dehradun’s urban areas and redirect them towards key locations such as the Selaqui industrial area, Vikasnagar, Herbertpur in Uttarakhand, and Paonta Sahib in Himachal Pradesh.
The project is part of a broader push to strengthen highway infrastructure under the Delhi-Dehradun Economic Corridor, which has been under development to improve travel time and logistics efficiency between the national capital and Uttarakhand. Once operational, the bypass is expected to reduce congestion levels and vehicular emissions within Dehradun, while also improving inter-state connectivity with northern states including Haryana, Punjab and Himachal Pradesh.
