Synopsis

Patel Engineering has been declared the lowest bidder for a major hydropower contract in Nepal, valued at INR 1,593.08 crore. The project, awarded by SJVN’s subsidiary, involves Package 2 of the 669 MW Lower Arun Hydroelectric Project and is expected to be completed in 54 months. The company highlighted its ongoing presence in the region through the nearby Arun-3 project and its focus on timely execution. This development follows another international order secured in Bhutan, reinforcing Patel Engineering’s growing footprint in South Asia’s hydropower sector.

Patel Engineering has secured a key infrastructure contract in Nepal after being declared the lowest bidder for a hydroelectric project in the Sankhuwasabha district, with an estimated value of INR 1,593.08 crore.

The company, in a regulatory filing, stated that it was selected as the L1 bidder by SJVN Lower Arun Power Development Company Pvt Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of SJVN. The contract pertains to Package 2 of the 669 MW Lower Arun Hydroelectric Project. The execution timeline for the project has been set at 54 months.

Managing Director Kavita Shirvairkar indicated that the company had started the first quarter of FY27 on a positive note with this order of around INR 1,600 crore. She noted that Nepal has strong hydroelectric potential and added that the Lower Arun project marks a step toward utilising this capacity for sustainable growth.

She further stated that the project goes beyond infrastructure development and contributes to Nepal’s broader objective of achieving energy independence and supporting regional economic progress. The company also highlighted its prior experience in the country, having worked on another SJVN hydroelectric project.

Referring to its ongoing involvement in the Arun-3 Hydropower Project, located approximately 35 km from the Lower Arun site, Shirvairkar said the company aims to bring proven engineering capabilities and ensure timely delivery. She added that the project is expected to set a benchmark for development in the region.

This development follows another international contract secured by Patel Engineering in the past month, valued at INR 230 crore, from Bhutan-based Dorjlung Hydro Power Ltd. The scope of that project includes pre-construction activities for the 1,125 MW Dorjilung Hydroelectric Power Project.

Mumbai-based Patel Engineering has an established presence in hydropower, tunnelling, and irrigation segments, with several domestic and international projects. The latest order further strengthens its position in the South Asian hydropower market, particularly in neighbouring countries with significant untapped energy resources.
