Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal recently launched the Bharat Taxi driver onboarding programme and app in Mumbai, marking a push towards a cooperative-led ride-hailing ecosystem. The platform, already operational in multiple cities, has onboarded over 5.17 lakh drivers and served 50 lakh users. With daily rides crossing 25,000, the initiative is scaling steadily. The government highlighted its focus on driver welfare, income stability, and a gradual shift towards electric vehicles, positioning Bharat Taxi as a competitive alternative to private aggregators.
Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal recently launched the Bharat Taxi auto-rickshaw and cab driver onboarding programme and its application in Mumbai. The launch event, held in Kandivali (West), saw participation from more than 500 drivers along with representatives from transport unions and cooperative organisations.
The minister stated that the initiative had been developed with a clear focus on improving the livelihoods of drivers who work long hours. He indicated that there has been ongoing concern around the challenges faced by a large number of drivers, and the programme aims to directly address these issues through a structured and cooperative platform.
Bharat Taxi operates as India’s first cooperative-led ride-hailing service. It is registered under the Multi-State Cooperative Societies Act, 2002, and was set up by eight national-level cooperative institutions. The platform was established in mid-2025 and officially rolled out earlier this year, marking a shift towards a more collective ownership model in the mobility sector.
The minister expressed confidence that the platform could grow into a strong national player and compete with established ride-hailing companies such as Uber and Rapido. He noted that since its launch, the platform has seen steady growth, scaling up from a small base to over 25,000 rides per day.
According to official data, Bharat Taxi has onboarded around 5.17 lakh drivers so far, while nearly 50 lakh customers have already used the service. The platform is currently operational in regions including Delhi NCR, Gujarat, Chandigarh and Lucknow, indicating its early-stage expansion across key urban markets.
The minister also pointed to the financial advantages of transitioning from CNG-powered vehicles to electric vehicles. He explained that even a partial shift in a region with over one lakh autos and taxis could significantly improve driver incomes by reducing fuel costs.
In addition, the government is working on introducing further welfare measures aimed at ensuring drivers receive benefits that are at par with, or better than, those offered by existing private platforms. The broader objective is to create a system where drivers have more stability, ownership and long-term earnings visibility.
