Synopsis

Noida International Airport has appointed its chief financial officer Nitu Samra as interim chief executive officer with immediate effect after a regulatory requirement mandated that airport CEOs must be Indian nationals. The change comes as the airport continues preparations for commercial operations following its inauguration by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in March this year. Christoph Schnellmann, who had been serving as CEO since August 2020, will now move to the role of executive vice chairman on the board. The interim arrangement will remain in place until a permanent CEO is selected by the board.

Noida International Airport has named its chief financial officer Nitu Samra as interim chief executive officer with immediate effect, following a leadership change triggered by regulatory requirements. The appointment places her in charge of overseeing ongoing development and operational readiness at the airport as it moves closer to launching commercial services.

The decision follows a directive from the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security, which mandated that chief executives of airports must be Indian nationals. This regulatory requirement prompted the restructuring of top leadership at the airport, which is being developed as a major aviation hub in the region.

Samra has been serving as the airport’s chief financial officer since October 2021 and will continue in an expanded role until the board finalises a formal selection process for a permanent chief executive. Christoph Schnellmann, who has led the airport as chief executive since August 2020, will now transition to the position of executive vice chairman on the board.

The airport, developed by Yamuna International Airport Private Limited, a subsidiary of Zurich Airport International AG, was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in March this year. It received its aerodrome license from the aviation regulator in the previous month, marking a key regulatory milestone ahead of the planned commencement of operations. The project at Jewar in Uttar Pradesh continues to progress towards phased commercial opening.
