The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) is planning to develop around 3.5 km of service roads along the Southern Peripheral Road (SPR) to address rising traffic congestion and improve internal connectivity across key sectors. The proposed stretches between sectors 70–70A and 70–75 aim to segregate local traffic from through movement on the arterial corridor. The project is currently at the detailed planning stage, with approvals and tendering expected to follow. In parallel, complementary upgrades, including a missing road link and enhanced road infrastructure, are being pursued to strengthen connectivity between SPR and adjoining corridors such as Sohna Road. The initiative forms part of broader efforts to streamline urban mobility in Gurugram.

The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) is planning to construct service roads along key stretches of the Southern Peripheral Road (SPR) to address increasing traffic congestion and improve last-mile connectivity in the city. The proposal, covering approximately 3.5 km, targets sections between sectors 70–70A and 70–75, where traffic pressure has intensified due to rapid urban development.


The planned service roads are intended to run parallel to the main carriageway, allowing local traffic to move separately from through traffic on the arterial corridor. This segregation is expected to reduce congestion on the main SPR stretch and improve traffic flow efficiency. The project is currently in the detailed project report (DPR) preparation stage, with tenders to be floated after necessary approvals are secured.

The move comes amid growing concerns over traffic bottlenecks along SPR, which has emerged as a critical east-west connectivity corridor linking Golf Course Extension Road, Sohna Road and National Highway-48. Increased residential and commercial development along the corridor has significantly added to vehicular load, necessitating infrastructure upgrades.

In addition to the service road proposal, GMDA is working on complementary infrastructure improvements to enhance connectivity across the region. These include the development of a key road link between sectors 68 and 69, designed to function as an alternative route to SPR and improve access to adjacent areas. The corridor is being planned with dual carriageways, service lanes, cycle tracks and pedestrian infrastructure, reflecting a multi-modal design approach.

The authority is also focusing on improving connectivity between SPR and Sohna Road through additional service road linkages, aimed at easing traffic movement between the two high-density corridors.

The service road initiative forms part of a broader infrastructure strategy to strengthen Gurugram’s road network and manage increasing urban traffic demand. Similar interventions, including road widening, flyover construction and drainage upgrades, are being undertaken across the city to improve mobility and reduce congestion hotspots.

The SPR corridor, in particular, has been a focal point for infrastructure upgrades due to its strategic importance in connecting emerging residential sectors and commercial hubs. The addition of service roads is expected to improve accessibility to adjoining sectors, reduce conflict points between local and through traffic, and enhance overall commuter experience.

Once implemented, the project is expected to support smoother traffic flow and improve connectivity across developing sectors along SPR. The phased execution and integration with existing road infrastructure indicate a structured approach towards addressing long-standing congestion issues in one of Gurugram’s key urban corridors.
