Synopsis

Jupiter Wagons Ltd is preparing to bid for a major suburban rail rolling stock tender floated by the Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC), valued at over INR 20,000 crore, marking its entry into passenger coach manufacturing. The tender involves procurement of around 2,800 coaches for upgrading Mumbai's suburban rail network. To support its bid, the company plans to invest approximately INR 1,000 crore in a greenfield passenger coach manufacturing facility over the next year. The move aligns with India's broader push towards expanding mass transit and high-speed rail infrastructure. The company is also exploring partnerships with global players as it diversifies beyond freight wagons into passenger and metro segments.

Kolkata-based Jupiter Wagons Ltd is preparing to participate in a large-scale suburban rail tender floated by Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation for Mumbai's rail network, while committing fresh investment towards passenger coach manufacturing, as part of its expansion into new business segments.

The tender, valued at over INR 20,000 crore, involves the procurement of approximately 2,800 passenger coaches aimed at modernising Mumbai's suburban railway system, which serves as a critical urban transport network. The bidding process is expected to conclude in the coming months, with the contract likely to be split between two players in a 60:40 ratio, according to company officials.

To support its participation, the company has outlined plans to invest around INR 1,000 crore in establishing a greenfield manufacturing facility dedicated to passenger coaches. The investment is expected to be deployed over the next year, with the facility targeted for completion by 2027. This will mark the company's first significant move into the passenger rolling stock segment, expanding beyond its existing focus on freight wagons and railway components.

The company's managing director indicated that it intends to collaborate with global partners for the tender, reflecting the technical and execution requirements associated with large-scale urban rail projects. The planned diversification also includes entry into the metro rail segment, signalling a broader strategy to participate in India's expanding urban transit infrastructure pipeline.

The suburban rail project is part of ongoing efforts to upgrade Mumbai's rail infrastructure, including improving passenger capacity, safety, and operational efficiency. The procurement of new rolling stock is expected to replace ageing systems and support higher commuter volumes in one of the country's most heavily used transit networks.

In parallel, Jupiter Wagons is also investing in upstream manufacturing capabilities. Through a subsidiary, the company is developing a rail wheel and axle forging plant in Odisha with an investment of approximately INR 3,000 crore, aimed largely at export markets. The facility is expected to manufacture up to 100,000 wheelsets annually, supporting both domestic and international demand.

The company currently has an order book of around INR 5,000 crore and is targeting revenue growth to INR 8,000-10,000 crore by the end of the decade. The move into passenger coach manufacturing is positioned as a key component of this growth strategy, aligned with policy support for mass transit and rail infrastructure expansion.

The development reflects increasing participation from private sector manufacturers in public transport infrastructure projects, particularly as government-led investments in suburban and metro rail systems continue to expand across major urban centres.
